Overview

SMS is seeking a skilled Full-Time or Part-Time Technical Writer to support the AFRL PRsISM contract by producing high-quality documentation, graphics, and instructional video materials. The successful candidate will translate complex technical concepts into clear, user-friendly content for both government stakeholders and end users. This role requires autonomy, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of Department of Defense (DoD) and Air Force documentation standards. A writing portfolio or sample work is highly encouraged, particularly for candidates from a writing/communications background.

Responsibilities

    Develop, write, and edit clear and concise technical documentation, including manuals, SOPs, FAQs, and training materials.
  • Collaborate with SMEs, engineers, and program managers to gather and clarify technical information.
  • Prepare supporting visual materials such as graphics, charts, and instructional videos.
  • Ensure compliance with DoD, Air Force, and internal formatting and content standards.
  • Review and peer-edit documentation for grammar, tone, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Organize complex information logically for a range of audiences and comprehension levels.
  • Manage multiple priorities with short deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Adapt content to different formats (e.g., web, print, video, live presentations).


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. citizenship with an active Secret clearance (or ability to obtain one).
  • 3+ years of professional experience in a technical writing or communications-related role.
  • Strong command of grammar, technical writing conventions, and documentation tools.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills across all mediums (written, web, video).
  • Experience delivering technical presentations or training in live or virtual settings.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with DoD, Air Force, or IC organizations (e.g., ARCYBER, NETCOM, PEOs).
  • Strong knowledge of complex IT systems and environments.
  • Experience in producing technical content aligned with DoD standards.
  • Skilled in developing project timelines and meeting tight deadlines.
  • Graphic and video editing capabilities to support instructional content.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work across various organizational levels.
