Position Highlights |
University Animal Care at the University of Arizona is in search of an Animal Technologist II. The position is distinguished from the Animal Technologist I in that it is an exempt position, and the potential candidates are the primary trainers for the Husbandry Sections of University Animal Care. Expected to be subject matter experts on all UAC processes/SOP's through the utilization of appropriate resources. Interact with researchers and staff to schedule and perform hands on facility orientation, animal handling, biohazard, and rodent breeding colony training, as appropriate to the research. Perform audits and provide coaching to UAC trainees, as directed. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Must be able to train staff on proper husbandry care for a variety of laboratory animal species at multiple facilities, and/or specific, detail-oriented tasks in the gnotobiotic mouse service or the Non-Approved Source quarantine. Person in this position is the primary source for process/procedural questions for research and UAC staff. University Animal Care (UAC) manages multiple centralized animal facilities at the University of Arizona and oversees the campus wide animal care and use program. UAC provides assistance to scientists, physicians, staff, and students who have received Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval to perform research, testing, or educational studies on animal subjects. UAC ensures humane and appropriate animal care and use by providing for the animals daily needs, veterinary care, and monitoring the use of the animals by principal investigators, technical personnel, and students. UAC is devoted to maintaining a safe environment that minimizes the risk of disease or injury to the animals and the personnel who work with them. Duties & Responsibilities |
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Highly experienced,
knowledgeable, and independently capable of performing husbandry processes and procedures for a wide range of federally regulated laboratory animal species in multiple animal facilities. - Provide
in-depth training on daily care and maintenance of a variety of laboratory animal species housed within UAC facilities. - Serve
as primary trainers for new UAC employees in husbandry. - Serve
as primary trainers of new research users for animal facility orientation and utilization. - Perform
and/or assist with reviewing/updating SOPs, breeding colony instruction forms, job aids, and training task forms. - Perform
quality assurance tasks for husbandry and/or cage wash operations. - Administer
more complex veterinary treatments to animals as directed. - Perform
VHP gas sterilization and QA monitoring. - Report
and assist in troubleshooting operational problems or equipment malfunctions. - The
position may serve in the weekend on call rotation to include coverage for unscheduled absences. - Additional
duties as assigned.

and skilled in working with animals exposed to hazards, rodent breeding colony management, large animal model handling/care, and/or enrichment programs
Physical/Environmental Requirements:
- Able to perform work that requires continuous bending ,stooping, twisting, standing and walking.
- Repetitive hand motion (changing cages).
- Able to be medically cleared to wear a respirator.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience and 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- American Association for Laboratory Animal Science Certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level or higher.
