Primary Purpose of Department
The College of Health and Human Services provides the highest quality educational experiences, engages in relevant research from bench to bedside, and acts as a primary partner in addressing community health and human services needs. The CHHS Advising Center serves all undergraduate students within the college's academic programs, students in transition, and prospective high school and transfer students in CHHS. The Center also provides orientation to new students, support to first-generation college students and transfer students, and intrusive advising initiatives for at-risk students.
Primary Purpose of Position
CHHS academic advisors assist students, by using a developmental model, to develop the knowledge and skills and personal accountability needed to explore their academic and co-curricular options, evaluate and track their own progress toward graduation, access support and enrichment services, and understand and follow university policies and timelines. Academic advisors should have a commitment to student success and the ability to listen and analyze academic needs, generate reports on academic progression, give graduation-oriented advising and collaborate with faculty in CHHS the to provide additional information/services/ programming to majors. The position will also participate in new student orientations and other events as necessary and develop a thorough working knowledge of campus support services and referral processes. Each academic advisor participates in academic programming and makes recommendations to academic program coordinators regarding academic program plans. In addition, the academic advisor is involved in university service through participating in the Academic Advising Improvement Team or other university or college committees related to academic advising, student success, retention and graduation. S/he assists unit academic administrators and the Associate Dean for academic affairs in recruitment, retention and success initiatives as determined.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The position is responsible for providing accurate academic advising to individuals and groups of current and potential undergraduate students in the College. Advisors proactively communicate with students who have poor mid-term grade performance or who have other risk factors for retention and/or success. Advisors assist in the management and operation of the CHHS Advising Center as determined by or in consultation with the Director and assist in the preparing reports related to student enrollment and progression. The position contributes to the professional development of fellow college and unit-level advisors. On occasion, academic advisors are involved in creating and implementing student programs that focus on improving student success, retention and graduation (i.e., College's Learning Community, 49er Rebound, University Convocation, Transfer Student Program, Prospect for Success Program, etc.).
Minimum Education/Experience
Education: A master's degree in student services, higher education, health or human services, or a related field is required.

Experience: two years of experience involving student academic advising in a higher education setting.

The candidate must also be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize while multi-tasking and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Excellent communication and interpersonal problem-solving skills are a must. Ability to interact effectively with advisees, staff, and faculty required. A viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements. Proficient use of computers (Banner or other student information system, Excel, Word, Gmail) is necessary.

Three years of academic advising in higher education; experience in residence life in higher education; working knowledge of BANNER, CONNECT, and DegreeWorks.
