Duties and Responsibilities
The Loyola University Health System ( LUHS) and the Loyola University Chicago ( LUC) Stritch School of Medicine in partnership with Hines VA Hospital ( HVA) are offering a full-time faculty position on the clinical educator track ( CET) for a Board Certified or Board Eligible Ophthalmologist. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong interest and prior commitment to clinical and/or basic science research. Candidates should have a history of outstanding clinical care and a strong academic commitment to the clinical training of residents and medical students. Cornea fellowship training is preferred. Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with training and experience.
Currently, the Loyola Department of Ophthalmology (Maywood and 4 additional satellite offices) and neighboring Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital manage over 65,000 patient visits per year. Currently 42 clinical faculty (18 full-time and 24 part-time) provide strong mentorship and outstanding clinical expertise in all the subspecialties. A dedicated resident education team including the Program Director, the Vice Chair of Education, the Residency Coordinator and 2 co-Chief Residents manage the residency training program of four residents per year. We also have a world class VR Simulation program for training ophthalmology residents, medical students as well as residents in other subspecialties. A robust calendar of CME programs provides outstanding exposure to regional and national experts in vision research, diversity, global eye health as well as all the subspecialties with an annual city-wide surgical wet lab for the 72 residents in Chicago.
We currently have 8 full-time basic science research faculty. The main Loyola research facility is a 225K square foot Center for Translational Research and Education ( CTRE), which opened in 2015 and houses the clinical Research Office ( CRO) and research administration. A large HVA research facility is conveniently located nearby.
Loyola Medicine, a member of Trinity Health, is a nationally ranked academic, quaternary care system based in Chicago's western suburbs. The three-hospital system includes Loyola University Medical Center, Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, MacNeal Hospital, as well as convenient locations offering primary care, specialty care and immediate care services from more than 1,500 physicians throughout Cook, Will and DuPage counties. Loyola is a 547-licensed-bed hospital in Maywood that includes the William G. and Mary A. Ryan Center for Heart & Vascular Medicine, the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, a Level 1 trauma center, Illinois's largest burn center, a certified comprehensive stroke center and a children's hospital. Having delivered compassionate care for over 50 years, Loyola also trains the next generation of caregivers through its academic affiliation with Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of Medicine and Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. Established in 1961, Gottlieb is a 247-licensed-bed community hospital in Melrose Park with the Judd A. Weinberg Emergency Department, the Loyola Center for Metabolic Surgery and Bariatric Care and the Loyola Cancer Care & Research Facility at the Marjorie G. Weinberg Cancer Center. MacNeal is a 374-licensed-bed teaching hospital in Berwyn with advanced medical, surgical and psychiatric services, acute rehabilitation, an inpatient skilled nursing facility and a 68-bed behavioral health program and community clinics.
