Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
PlayMakers Repertory Company (
PRC) is the premiere professional theater company of North Carolina, serving as a working laboratory for the Department of Dramatic Art and as a nationally recognized cultural destination for
UNC and the entire southeast region. PlayMakers Repertory Company strives to produce entertaining, relevant, and courageous work that tells stories from and for a multiplicity of perspectives and creates transformational impact in our immediate and extended communities.
PRC manages the planning and oversight of a $3.1 million professional and educational theater operation. This unit has a staff of about 175 which includes approximately 47 employees, 20 independent contractors, 30 work-study students and up to 100 volunteers. Approximately 37 of these employees are seasonal employees, requiring new contracts and university personnel paperwork for each season. This unit is responsible for creating significant professional artistic programming, student and community engagement activities and attendant fundraising endeavors. The unit functions as a program of the Department of Dramatic Art. |
Position Summary |
The Associate Technical Director's (
ATD) primary responsibilities are to assist the Technical Director in the planning and construction of all PlayMakers Repertory Company (
PRC) productions and assist in ensuring that the work performed, in the Scene Shop, is executed professionally and efficiently according to the prescribed standards. The
ATD will also have responsibilities relating to design analysis, budget management and reporting, personnel management, scheduling, supervision of scenery construction, collaborating with other production and technical departments, equipping and maintaining all shop areas, and purchasing materials. The
ATD will also act as Technical Director for one to two shows per season and instruct graduate and undergraduate students in the Scene Shop. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to tutoring, supplemental instruction, or direction of programs that enhance educational experiences of enrolled or prospective students, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Master of Fine Arts Degree in Theater or a relevant post-baccalaureate degree. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Training in Technical Production and 3-5 years of comparable technical production experience. Previous experience supervising employees, managing budgets and working in theatrical construction, theatrical rigging, and motion control required. Must have a working knowledge of a variety of construction skills, including, but not limited to, woodworking and metalworking; understanding of structural analysis as it pertains to theatre; maintenance of shop equipment; and proficiency in the operation of a wide variety of shop equipment. A working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, AutoCAD and Photo Shop also required. |
