Responsibilities

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108 bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment for psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18yrs. Newport News has an on-site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming. Newport News, VA is a beautiful seaside city, rich in maritime history and conveniently located to DC and other major North Eastern cities.

Job Summary:

Responsible for planning and providing vocational instruction for students of the Young Adult Program for General/Special Education for ages 18-21. He/She participates in departmental meetings and completes paperwork pertaining to vocational assessments, vocational training, monitoring student progress, reporting student progress, and transition planning as related to each student's educational needs. Provides education case management for students assigned to his/her classroom. He/She must maintain ongoing communication with the families and involved agencies for each student.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Reviews records and information received from each student's home school in order to develop the educational program in collaboration with the Education Director or designee.
  • Provides timely documentation of individualized, monthly academic and behavioral progress and produces reports for treatment team meetings, participating in meetings as a stakeholder in promoting successful outcomes for all residents.
  • Administers CTE programs for residents that are flexible and adapt to the need for a curriculum inclusive of economics and personal finance content, other middle and high school CTE electives, and is consistent with requirements of Virginia's Individual Student Alternative Education Plan (ISAEP).
  • Participates in the development and implementation of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for students who are eligible for Special Education services, as required by the Local Education Agency (LEA) or NNBHC, creates an Individualized Instructional Plan (IIP) for appropriate residents in coordination with colleagues, and implements 504 Plans or ESY Plans, accommodations and services, as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with contracted providers to develop and implement goals, services, and accommodations for residents with related services (e.g. Speech/Language, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, etc.).
  • Submits lesson plans to Lead Teacher, Academic Coordinator, or Education Director as requested. Conceives, constructs, and produces planned, classroom activities to maintain student readiness for learning at least one week in advance.
  • Utilizes sound pedagogical and behavioral strategies for working with students who may demonstrate significant emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Evaluates student work, completes interims and report cards according to school calendar timelines, and distributes to the appropriate parties.
  • Participates in professional development for the facility and/or Education Department that ensures compliance with contractual agreements, hospital, and state regulatory requirements, and Joint Commission on Behavioral Health standards.

Qualifications

Position Qualifications:

Must have a Bachelor's Degree in a related field. Must hold a valid, Virginia Teaching License in a recognized Career and Technical Education (CTE) area. Certification to teach Economics & Personal Finance (e.g. Family and Consumer Sciences) preferred. Familiarity with Career Development and Technical Education through Imagine Learning's Edgenuity Curriculum is desirable. Must be willing and able to teach functional, academic reading and math, regardless of licensure. Prefer dual certification in Special Education or good, working knowledge Special Education regulations and behavior management applicable to a school setting, dynamic flexibility, and a willingness to grow professionally. Previous classroom experience in a mental health setting is potentially advantageous but by no means required.
