General Statement of Responsibilities:

The Psychiatric Mental Health Registered Nurse at Boynton Health performs nursing duties including prescriber support and delegated responsibilities in the student-only Mental Health Clinic. Job Responsibilities, Knowledge and Skills:

Responsibilities*:

  • Psychiatric prescriber support
  • Manage psychiatric secure messages and phone calls
  • Provide refills using nursing protocol and standing orders
  • Complete prior authorizations
  • Patient visits: vitals, DISCUS, safety assessments and intakes including reporting significant findings to prescriber
  • Assist with hospitalizations via protocol
  • Coordinate with other clinic areas or outside clinics/providers
  • Thorough and timely documentation in EMR
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Commitment to anti-racism and on-going development of inclusivity and equity
  • Cleaning and disinfecting according to infection control protocol
  • Adherence to maintaining client confidentiality and rights
  • Respond to situations as they arise throughout the day, including triage

Provide culturally competent health education and counseling:

  • Promote patient understanding of health practices or needed care
  • Provide brief supportive counseling interventions to patients

Continually improve systems and processes supporting nursing practice:

  • Attend and participate in Boynton Health staff meetings and inservices
  • Maintain familiarity and compliance with applicable OSHA, MERTKA, and HIPPA guidelines
  • Coordinate/participate in ongoing review of patient care policies, procedures and protocols
  • Coordinate/participate in Quality Improvement projects
  • Maintain current knowledge/awareness of Boynton Health patient care improvements and initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with mental illness; signs, symptoms and manifestations
  • Suicide risk and interventions
  • Recognition and appropriate response to psychiatric and medical emergencies (Triage)
  • Psychotropic medications and side effects
  • Community resources including TMS, therapy, food and housing

Skills:

  • Nursing assessments
  • Comfortable discussing suicidal ideation and safety
  • Communication and motivational interviewing including boundaries
  • Clear and concise documentation
  • Creative problem-solving
  • Flexibility in working with a dynamic team

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

  • Mobility to work in a typical clinic setting and use standard equipment
  • Standing, walking and/or sitting for long periods of time
  • Some bending, twisting, stooping, and stretching
  • Requires repetitive hand and wrist motion to operate a keyboard
  • Possible exposure to communicable disease and medical preparations in the clinic setting
  • Ability to demonstrate immune status to measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and hepatitis B
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms
  • Ability to push and pull wheelchairs, gurneys, oxygen tanks and IV poles
  • Ability to perform CPR in an emergency situation
  • Vision to read printed materials and VDT screens and provide necessary patient care
  • Ability to respond to patient needs in emergency situations
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS with at least 2 years of experience or a combination of related education (ADN) and work experience to equal at least 6 years
  • Mental health nursing experience, at least 1 year
  • Completion of accredited professional nursing program
  • Licensure by the state of Minnesota to practice professional nursing
  • Current CPR training and willingness to recertify as needed
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism and promoting a culture that respects and advances diversity, equity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Board Certification in Mental Health
  • Motivational interviewing skills

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $43.59-$54.28 hourly; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: up to a 75% continuous appointment 9 or 10 months in duration with summer's off.
