Position description

The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology (PMB) within the Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) seeks applications for a Junior to Assistant Specialist in Dr. Rachel Brem's Lab in the area of Evolutionary Genetics of Fungi.

The Brem lab is a highly inclusive and collaborative environment, that studies how organisms acquire new traits that allow them to thrive in their environments.

The Junior or Assistant Specialist's primary focus will be to investigate the genetic mechanisms of evolution using fungi as a model. By collaborating with Graduate Student lab members, who are working to discover the genes that underlie differences between fungal species in growth, metabolism, and development.

The Junior or Assistant Specialist will provide research support to a variety of the lab's methods, including; classical, high-throughput culture, transformation, and growth assays of yeast and filamentous fungi; high-throughput sequencing library preparation; and bacterial transformation, growth, plasmid purification, restriction enzyme digestion for analytical and cloning purposes, agarose gel purification of restricted bands, ligation of DNA fragments.

Job Duties (while not limited to) may include assistance with the development and maintenance of:

Detailed records of the experiments performed and conclusions made, and potential outcomes

Communicating results orally, through active participation at weekly lab meetings

Daily record keeping in the laboratory notebook (including written protocols for new assays)

Graphing cumulative data as it is generated

Interpreting data and drawing conclusions

Preparation and participation with experiments, at times more than one per day

Complete assigned background reading/research, as necessary for the progression of research projects

Assisting with publications of research results


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) program.

Preferred qualifications

Demonstrated experience performing experiments, including;



  • Planning
  • Data Documentation
  • Communication of findings and/or results


Demonstrated experience with experimental procedures, including;



  • Trouble-shooting for on-going research, and the associated protocols
  • Development of protocols for new research and/or projects


Applied experience in the areas of;



  • Computational genomics and/or
  • Microbiology
