Public Works Maintenance Worker II - Parks & Landscape

Definition

Under general and/or immediate supervision, performs a variety of maintenance and construction duties in the City's field maintenance services involving a variety of street, sewer, asphalt, parks, streets or facilities maintenance, repair and reconstruction work.

Position Snapshot/A Day in the Life: The Public Works Maintenance Worker II is responsible for maintaining City parks and landscaped areas, including preparing and maintaining ball fields, inspecting and repairing playground equipment, picnic tables, and other park amenities, and ensuring public restrooms are in working order. Additional duties involve painting and maintaining park structures, responding to public inquiries, and handling emergency maintenance needs. Depending on departmental needs, the worker may also support special events, coordinate with other City departments, and assist with special park and landscape projects.

This hands-on position allows you to utilize your specialized skills to maintain and repair critical infrastructure while ensuring your team provides high-quality service. You will handle more intricate projects, troubleshoot maintenance issues, and ensure tasks are completed efficiently and on schedule. Your role will also involve operating various heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, and a range of hand tools.

Additionally, you'll assist with project planning, prepare weekly work assignments, and determine equipment and material needs. Extensive experience in maintenance and construction, along with strong leadership skills, is essential to guide and mentor your team. Essential Functions

The employee must have the ability to:

  • Cut out and remove portions of a street to be repaired; shovel and spread asphalt and asphalt base in patching, repairing and reconstruction streets; skinpatch street as required; overlay areas of street.
  • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
  • Remove grass and debris along sidewalk area; cut and remove roots; use concrete cutting and breaking equipment; load truck with debris.
  • Construct forms and grade area; pour and assist in finishing concrete and masonry work; remove concrete forms and perform rough carpentry work.
  • Maintain and install street signs; paint and strip City streets, parking lots, and curbs; paint lift stations.
  • Clean up debris from storm drains, catch basins, sewer maps and oft stations; inspect sewers for stoppages; repair laterals and main sewer lines; degrease manholes.
  • Clean parking lots, walkways, ditches, alleys, and streets areas; sweep and buff floors; clean and sanitize restrooms; vacuum and steam clean rugs; wash and clean equipment and vehicles.
  • Fuel vehicles and equipment; change tires on all equipment; assist mechanics in servicing vehicle and equipment; pick up parts; maintain a clean shop area.
  • Water, mow, weed, trim, edge and fertilize lawns; spray herbicides; plant, water and maintain landscaped areas consisting of bushes, trees, flowers shrubs, and lawns.
  • Prepare and maintain the ball fields; cut ball field turf; dress, drag and line the ball field for use; paint ball field bleachers.
  • Clean and sanitize the restrooms; replace broken restroom fixtures; paint the inside and outside of the restroom facilities.
  • Trim and prune bushes, trees, and shrubs; stake trees as necessary; rake leaves and clear debris from walks, fields, tennis courts and other facilities.
  • Empty trash receptacles; transport trash and rubbish to the local landfill.
  • Inspect and repair playground equipment, picnic tables, barbeques and other related parks equipment and facilities.
  • Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the City's irrigation system; change and adjust heads; maintain controllers and assist in large irrigation system installation and maintenance projects.
  • Operate maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, rollers, front loaders, and power tools such as compressors, jack hammers, paint sprayers, mowers, edgers and blowers; maintain hand tools and assigned equipment.
  • Perform work in emergency situations as required.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  • Perform any tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer.

Working Conditions: Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 25 pounds or more. The position requires near and far vision when inspecting work. Incumbents work in all weather conditions, use cleaning and lubricating chemicals which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants, drive motorized vehicles, heavy equipment and work around moving traffic and often works with constant interruptions. The incumbent is also required to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment.

A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. The employee must have knowledge of:

  • Uses and purposes of general maintenance and construction tools and equipment.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Methods, techniques and tools and the operational characteristics of maintenance equipment used in the construction and maintenance of field maintenance operations.

Ability to:

  • Perform a variety of maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned.
  • Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner in routine situations.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.

Experience: One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience performing field maintenance duties comparable to those performed by a Maintenance Worker I.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in park operations, including repairs to restroom plumbing and fixtures, fencing, playground structures and surfacing, ballfields, concrete, basic electrical components, and park amenities such as benches and drinking fountains.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of park operations methods and techniques, with strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work independently, ensuring an effective repair.
  • Proficient in operating a wide range of tools and equipment, from hand tools to heavy machinery, applying them safely and effectively to ensure long-lasting repairs.

Education: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment, a California Class "B" License with Tanker Endorsement.
