SUMMARY
Investigators for the Montgomery County Office of the Public Defender are responsible for providing investigative services for adult and juvenile clients facing criminal legal matters. The investigator gathers evidence to assist trial teams build a strong defense for our clients. The investigator reviews all evidence related to the case, including witness statements, Police reports, and physical evidence. The investigator interviews witnesses, takes photographs, reviews related reports, and obtains all related records and available surveillance. The investigator documents all evidence and maintains detailed case notes. Investigators must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and committed to finding the truth and getting the best possible outcome for our clients. Investigators report to the Chief Investigators and trial attorneys depending on case assignment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Performing comprehensive and exhaustive investigation of assigned criminal matters. * Gathering of records, reports, and other documentary materials (i.e. cell records, surveillance etc.). * Locating and interviewing lay and expert witnesses; * Reviewing and analyzing discovery and other case documentation. * Crime scene investigation and recreation. * Knowledge of photography and the workings of cellular phones, tablets, and related technology. * Preparing comprehensive and exhaustive fact chronological summaries, written memoranda, and other reports. * Interviewing clients and witnesses. * Writing comprehensive investigation reports. * Testifying in court as needed. * Perform additional duties as specified by the Chief Public Defender or Chief Investigator.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education and Credentials * Bachelor's degree; criminal justice or a related field preferred or High School Diploma/GED with significant law enforcement and/or private investigations experience.
Experience and Skills * Experience in investigations required. * Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to engage with and establish rapport with people from a variety of different backgrounds.
