Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Residential Life is responsible for providing a safe and supportive community for North Carolina Central University students through services, programs, and high-quality facilities focused on student success.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Director of Residential Life provides strategic leadership and vision for the Residential Life Department in alignment with the university's mission and divisional strategic goals. This position fosters a safe, supportive, and developmentally enriching residential environment that enhances student success and contributes to the holistic development of students. By collaborating
with campus and community partners, the Director ensures a high-quality residential experience while overseeing operations, policies, crisis response, and long-term planning for campus housing.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in data analysis and report generation using Microsoft Excel, including proficiency in spreadsheets, pivot tables, charts, and data visualization tools to support decision-making and operational efficiency.
  • Commitment to delivering exceptional customer service, with the ability to resolve student and parent concerns efficiently.
  • Must be knowledgeable of Association of College and University Housing Officers - International standards for residential programs.
  • Must be knowledgeable of Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education standards for residential programs.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years progressive experience and a history of transformational leadership at a senior level in the area of
  • residential life at a mid to large scale higher educational institution with a diverse body of faculty, staff and students.
  • Masters degree in Higher Education or comparable academic discipline is required.
  • Experience with managing complex multi-million-dollar budgets.
  • Experience with living facility operations, capital planning, and facility maintenance.
  • Experience with program development, student development, and staff development.
  • Experience with business operations and revenue generating.
  • Experience with the development and implementation of Living Learning Communities.
  • Experience with managing P3 Residential projects
  • Preferred experience with Housing Management Systems (Housing Cloud, Mercury, etc)

Primary Responsibilities and Duties


Function Management & Administration
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

  • Provides leadership for all housing operations and summer conference occupancy processes, including housing deposits, applications, room selection, special accommodations, cancellations, and room changes.
  • Develops and implements strategic housing assignment systems that maximize occupancy, revenue generation, student satisfaction, and retention.
  • Establishes comprehensive policies and procedures aligned with university, divisional, and departmental goals, ensuring regular review and updates.
  • Leads crisis intervention strategies, ensuring prompt and effective response during and after critical incidents affecting residential students or facilities.
  • Collaborates with Facilities Management to develop short-term and long-term strategies for residence hall capital improvements, renovations, and facility enhancements to maintain high-quality living environments.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with key campus partners, including Campus Safety, Facilities, Housekeeping, New Student & Family Programs, Enrollment Management, and University College, to support student success, recruitment, and retention efforts.
  • Prepares detailed reports, assessments, and presentations on Residential Life programs, services, and operational effectiveness.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by senior leadership



Function Supervision
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

  • Directly supervises professional and administrative staff, including Associate/Assistant Directors, Assignment Coordinator, Residential Life Coordinators, and administrative and tech support personnel.
  • Provides oversight and guidance to student staff, including Resident Assistants (RAs), Graduate Assistants, and desk assistants, ensuring they are well-trained and equipped to support students effectively.
  • Establishes performance goals, professional development plans, and evaluation processes to ensure staff effectiveness.
  • Develop, train and evaluate a strong leadership team committed to quality services, community development and an optimal learning environment.



Function Business & Fiscal Management
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

  • Provides fiscal oversight and strategic budget management for Residential Life budget (approximately $16-18M), ensuring responsible stewardship of resources and alignment with university financial priorities.
  • Collaborates with Finance and Administration to ensure appropriate revenue generation strategies, including housing fees, occupancy optimization, and summer conference revenue streams.
  • Ensures compliance with university procurement, contracts, and financial policies related to residence hall operations and facility services.
