About the Department |
We are seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, team oriented Small Animal Internal Medicine (
SAIM) Specialist that is dedicated to advancing
SAIM through research, teaching and service. Our team currently includes 10
SAIM Diplomates, 11 residents, 2
SAIM focused rotating interns, 13 rotating interns, 7 technicians, 1 client liaison, 1 embedded pharmacist, 2 social workers and 3 client services representatives. Our teaching hospital includes Emergency and Critical Care, Surgery, Neurology, Cardiology, Oncology, Nutrition, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Pharmacy, Anesthesia, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Dentistry, Behavior, Zoo and Exotics, Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology services.
The mission of the Small Animal Internal Medicine Service is to be a leader in advancing academic small animal medicine, addressing the needs of students, house officers, clients, and referring veterinarians. Our faculty will prioritize fostering the mastery of clinical problem-solving skills in students and house officers. Additionally, our faculty will lead in training the next generation of clinician-scientists, with a focus on developing and recognizing subspecialties while modeling the integration of internal medicine, nephrology/urology, critical care, and emergency medicine. Furthermore, our faculty will generate and disseminate novel, clinically relevant knowledge and establish programs of comparative medical excellence, consistent with the goals of One Health.

Essential Job Duties |
The selected candidate for this tenure-track position will integrate in all aspects of the
SAIM service including:
- Have small internal medicine case responsibility, providing effective and efficient patient care, house officer oversight, and hospital management, with continually improving quality care; This position is expected to be on clinical service 16-20 weeks per year.
- Provide clinical teaching in small animal internal medicine, developing innovative and valued learning experiences for the students and house officers.
- Provide teaching in pre-clinical courses in small animal internal medicine and in preparatory courses in topics such as problem-solving, communications, techniques, and others.
- Demonstrate research productivity through the procurement of external grant funding and the publication of peer-reviewed scientific papers. Research focus in infectious disease/immunology, nutrition, endocrinology, hepatobiliary, respiratory or gastrointestinal disease is desirable but all areas of SAIM will be considered.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
DVM (or equivalent degree) and ACVIM or ECVIM residency training- Board certification or accepted credentials for board certification in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine - Small Animal Internal Medicine (ACVIM-SAIM) or European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM) required by start date.

- Strong communication and leadership skills to collaborate with students, faculty, and staff.
- Strong time management and multitasking skills to balance clinical, teaching, and research responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Diplomate status in ACVIM - SAIM or ECVIM
- Evidence of advanced training in research (PhD or other research experience) and/or post-graduate training in education
- Evidence of research productivity through publication in peer-reviewed journals.

- Candidates must meet requirements for and maintain a veterinary license (or faculty certificate) in the State of North Carolina.
