Histology Supervisor

The Histology Lab Supervisor will oversee the daily operations of the Grossing and Histology departments. This individual will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient workflow, maintaining high standards of quality control, managing personnel, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The supervisor will work closely with pathologists, laboratory technicians, and other laboratory professionals to ensure accurate and timely results for diagnostic purposes. The supervisor will ensure turnaround time standards are met daily within the histology and grossing departments.

Leadership and Management:

  • Supervise grossing procedures for surgical specimens, including the accurate description, dissection, and preparation for histological examination.
  • Ensure proper specimen handling, labeling, and preservation during the grossing process.
  • Maintain equipment, troubleshoot issues, and ensure that grossing rooms are well-organized and meet safety and regulatory standards.
  • Train and evaluate grossing technicians to maintain high standards of accuracy and consistency.

Histology Department Oversight:

  • Oversee the preparation of tissue samples for microscopic examination, ensuring accurate tissue embedding, sectioning, and staining.
  • Ensure histological preparations meet established quality standards and that appropriate methods are followed for immunohistochemistry and other specialized staining techniques.
  • Monitor and manage reagent inventory, ordering supplies as needed and ensuring all necessary materials are available for processing.
  • Implement and monitor quality control and assurance protocols within the histology laboratory, ensuring precise results and minimizing errors.

Quality Control and Compliance:

  • Perform regular audits of both departments to ensure adherence to laboratory policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation and record-keeping in compliance with internal and external regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for both Grossing and Histology departments.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to specimen processing, equipment, or staff performance

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Foster a collaborative environment between the Grossing and Histology departments and other laboratory teams.
  • Communicate effectively with pathologists and laboratory manager to address any concerns regarding specimen preparation or processing.
  • Provide support during accreditation or inspection processes, preparing necessary documentation and ensuring compliance.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in a healthcare/laboratory environment.
  • 5+ years of experience in reference laboratories with 2 years of leadership experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, internet, office/fax machines
  • Knowledge of grossing procedures, histology techniques, and laboratory regulations (CLIA, CAP, OSHA)
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to maintain high standards of accuracy.
  • Experience with multiple Laboratory Information Systems.
  • HT or HTL certification or eligible for certification with completion within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience with budget management.

Physical Position Requirements

  • Must be able to remain in stationary position for extended period.
  • Must be able to bend and crouch to reach supplies and lift over 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet turnaround time
  • Ability to work in a lab environment with chemicals, reagents, and biological specimens.
