Job Summary

This is a research position in the Kleen Lab in the Weill Institute of Neurosciences, Department of Neurology, and UCSF Epilepsy Center. It involves the study of brain function and how diseases disrupt it, particularly epilepsy, which is one of the most common neurological disorders. Specifically, we are attempting to understand memory and cognition circuits in the brain, how to pinpoint where seizures start, and ultimately develop better treatments for these problems. This position has excellent potential for developing skills and career growth: You will work directly with doctors on cutting-edge technology using computer programming and data analysis, and you may have the opportunity for publication co-authorship(s) depending on your work effort and extent of contribution(s) to ongoing projects.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

Throughout the Department of Neurology at UCSF, our mission is to deliver superb patient care, to apply state-of-the-art translational research methods to discover the causes of and treatments for human nervous system disorders, and to educate each generation of medical students, neurology residents and postdoctoral fellows. By fostering cross-disciplinary interactions among scientists around the world, we accelerate the pace of discovery and champion the University's global health initiatives.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to computer science, statistics, mathematics, electrical engineering, or computational biology/neuroscience and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated proficiency programming in Matlab OR Python (either ok; please provide code samples)
  • Ability to work positively and collaboratively (team mentality) with people from all backgrounds
  • At least some education/experience in clinical or basic science research and statistics
  • Reliability and efficiency, under guidance and independently
  • Organizational and efficiency skills such as: planning and decision-making abilities, completing assigned duties with timeliness, attention to detail, logical thinking/analytical abilities and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge +/- experience with signal processing analysis (such as Fourier and wavelet methods)
  • Familiarity with the Linux terminal (bash shell) and experience with remote Linux/Ubuntu servers
