Research Technician I

We are seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to work on research projects in the Gastrointestinal Unit laboratory of Dr. Andrew T. Chan. Specifically, we are looking for someone to assist in our ongoing translational research efforts within our clinical trials related to the prevention of gastrointestinal cancers and aspirin chemoprevention. Our studies combine genomics, genetics, proteomics, and cell biology to study the underlying biological mechanisms of aspirin chemoprevention and identify biomarkers for utility in precision medicine.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The selected candidate will work independently on experimental research projects directly supervised by the principal investigator and post-doctoral fellows (80%) and will also spend about 20% of his/her effort on laboratory management duties, including purchasing and organizing supplies, supervising equipment maintenance, and preparing stock solutions. Candidates will be expected to think independently and troubleshoot experiments with collaborative guidance from colleagues. Opportunities may arise for independent research projects that align with the mission of the laboratory for a technician who is highly motivated and productive.

Tasks:

  • Process incoming clinical research samples, such as blood, tissue, stool, and mucus.
  • Perform biological wet lab procedures, such as DNA/RNA/protein extraction, western blots, qRT-PCR, and cell/tissue culture.
  • Maintain inventory of research samples, laboratory reagents, and general supplies.
  • Other tasks as needed to support research projects, such as sample collection kit assembly, auditing records, and arranging material transfers between institutions.

The Research Technician is expected to work full time (40 hours/week).

Skills:

Required:

  • Basic laboratory skills, including but not limited to: pipetting, aseptic technique, and stock solution preparation.
  • Communication skills, including but not limited to: maintaining accurate records, writing/understanding complex instructions, analyzing and summarizing quantitative data, and updating managers/coworkers on group tasks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.
  • Tolerance for blood, tissue, stool, mucus, and other bodily fluids/solids.

Standout:

  • Proficiency in one or more of the following: mammalian cell culture, biospecimen handling/biobanking, qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, western blotting
  • Experience with inventory management, especially with Laboratory Inventory Management Systems (LIMS) such as LabArchives
  • Experience with programming languages and version control, especially Python and git

EDUCATION:

  • B.S. degree (conferred or expected by Spring 2025) or equivalent in Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or related STEM discipline for Research Technician I.
  • 2+ years post- baccalaureate biomedical laboratory experience or a Master's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or related STEM discipline for Research Technician II.
