Job Summary

The genetic counselor provides genetic counseling and genetic risk assessment services to individuals with a personal and/or family history of hereditary disease or disorders. These referrals come from a variety of internal and external sources. In some instances, the counselor may work in a multi-disciplinary manner with other Greenville Health System providers. The genetic counselor will provide community and health care provider education and will work to develop the genetic counseling program and referral base.

The genetic counselor must be able to work with patients who have diverse cultural backgrounds, diverse life experience, education levels, life styles and socioeconomic statuses. Sensitivity and the ability to work with patients confidentially and positively are essential.

Knowledge of health care systems, health insurance authorization processes, community resources and the ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team are essential skills and knowledge required for this genetic counselor position

Essential Functions

  • Provides Genetic Counseling consultations for hereditary cancer indications (identifying appropriate candidates for genetic testing following an extensive assessment of personal and family history information, counseling about complex genetic testing options, facilitating genetic testing with national laboratories when elected, communicating results of genetic testing, counseling patients regarding management recommendations for hereditary cancer syndromes when applicable).

  • Activeparticipantin tumor conferences, offering insight tooncologists and other providers

  • Supervises genetic counseling graduate students, interns, residents, fellows and others as determined appropriate by Cancer Center Leadership.

  • Participates in genetic research initiatives as required by Program Leaders.

  • Supports clinical and researchinitiativesthrough local, regional ornational presentations,publicationsandteachingopportunities.

  • Supports marketing and business development activities including in-service training and development activities including in-service training anddevelopmentof marketing collateral.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited American Board of Genetic Counseling training program.

  • Experience - No experience required. Two (2) years oncology genetics counseling preferred

  • CGC - CERT GENETIC COUNSELOR - CCGC

  • Board certification as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling - Preferred

  • Computer skill (word processing, spreadsheets, databases and data entry)

  • Knowledge of office equipment (fax/copier)
