PAY RATE The goal for this program is that no employee will lose pay as a result of entering into the apprenticeship program. During the apprenticeship, the employee will earn the higher of either the apprenticeship rate or the rate assigned to their permanent classification. The following is the step progression for the Elevator/Escalator Apprenticeship Program (other grades are outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement).

DEFINITION
Under general supervision performs skilled preventive maintenance, repair and modification to elevators, escalators and related equipment in a wide variety of District facilities; and performs related duties as assigned.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a journey level classification performing the full scope of skilled maintenance and repair work on both elevators and escalators. Although incumbents are normally assigned to one or the other type of equipment, they must be sufficiently familiar with both to provide assistance in emergency or relief situations. This class is distinguished from other related mechanical repair classes by the focus on the specific type of equipment repaired.
CURRENT ASSIGNMENT
The District is pleased to accept applications for the Elevator/Escalator Trainee Program to establish
an eligibility list of candidates for vacancies that may occur within the next 12 months.
The Elevator/Escalator Worker is responsible for performing skilled preventive maintenance, repair and modification to elevators, escalators and related equipment in a wide variety of District facilities; and performs related duties as assigned. The Elevator/Escalator Trainee Program is a state approved program that gives applicants the ability to gain the technical and on the job training needed to become journey workers through an organized and properly supervised training program. The approved program is designed to be forty eight months and includes an attainment of 6399 hours. At the completion of the program applicant will successfully receive the required state certified license. REQUIREMENTS TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE PROGRAM: Employees in the program must maintain acceptable attendance.
This is defined as:
No more than six (6) absences within a six month rolling time period. No unauthorized absences (no call, no show) in which the employee declares time off for which there is no associated accrual of sick leave. No reporting to work late for more than six (6) minutes without calling prior to shift to request accrued leave.
In the event that an employee is disqualified from the program as a result of attendance, the employee can appeal to the JATC. They will determine if circumstances warrant reconsideration of the disqualification from the program. PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY: Interested employees in the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 1021 collective bargaining unit who meet the following eligibility requirements will be allowed to compete in the selection process. In order to be eligible, the employee must:
Have worked no less than 18 months and/or 3120 hours in any classification in the SEIU collective bargaining agreement. Be currently employed as a full time employee at the time of posting. Be in active paid status on the date the program is advertised. Employees on a full-time disability or workers compensation will not be eligible to participate in the apprenticeship program. Have no disciplinary action related to attendance or suspension of any kind in the official personnel file for twelve (12) months prior to the posting for the apprenticeship program.
OTHER ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Selected candidates must meet the physical requirements for the classification of an Elevator/Escalator Worker including but not limited to: the ability to physically work in confined work spaces, and lift and/or pull equipment weighing up to 100 pounds for a short distance. Must be willing and able to work weekends, holidays, off hour shifts and occasional emergency overtime. Any disciplinary action that leads to suspension will disqualify a candidate from continuing in the Trainee Program. Employees who are disqualified from the program will be allowed to reapply after twenty four (24) months from the time of the disqualification. After the second disqualification from the program, the employee will only be considered for the apprenticeship program if there are no other eligible candidates.
SELECTION PROCESS
This is a SEIU Local 1021 Bargaining unit position.
Elevator/Escalator Trainee is open to SEIU members only. All SEIU members must follow the "Bid Form Process." Failure to comply will invalidate an employee's application.
The Employment Office will screen bids/applications/resumes against the minimum qualifications. Those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be referred to the hiring department for further consideration. The selection process may involve a skills/performance test, written exam, and/or a panel interview.
All applicants are asked to complete the application and/or Bid Form in full, indicating dates of employment, all positions held, hours worked, and a full description of duties. Examples of Duties

- Following a pre-established schedule, performs preventive maintenance and cleaning escalators, including checking handrails, steps, combs, contacts, relays, plates, rollers and brakes.
- Performs preventive maintenance and adjustments on elevators, including door operations, hydraulic and cable elements, interlocks, relays, hoists and governers.
- Inspects for maintenance needs, makes basic repairs to ensure safety, places barricades or signs and notifies foreworker.
- Repairs escalators and elevators, determining the exact nature of the malfunction; replaces work parts, including handrails, bearings and electrical components.
- Inspects equipment to determine reasons for frequent failures and problems; suggests improvements and works with engineering and other maintenance staff regarding modifications.
- Uses diagnostic test equipment and precision measuring devices in the course of the work; performs basic welding as required to complete repairs.
- Reads and interprets diagrams, engineering drawings, manuals, schematics and work orders; measures, tests and inspects completed work to confirm adherence to specifications.
- Maintains records of work performed and parts and materials used.
- Operates District vehicle to reach equipment to be serviced; may operate cranes or other equipment as required for repair; follows proper safety procedures.
- Answers patron questions regarding work activities; requests supplies through supervisor or from stock.

Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Must possess sufficient physical ability to walk, climb, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, stand and twist. Must possess sufficient physical ability to work in confined spaces. Must possess sufficient physical ability to work at heights up to 45 feet and walk on uneven surfaces. Must have sufficient physical ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 100 pounds a short distance. Must possess sufficient physical ability to work in a dusty, greasy and dirty environment subject to odors and noise. Must be able to wear respiratory protective equipment during the performance of assigned duties in accordance with the District Respirator Program and applicable Cal-OSHA requirements. Must be willing to work occasional emergency overtime.
