Description of the Department or Unit
Beginning with the First Year Seminar, the General Education Program accounts for 41 semester hours of a student's degree program. The program includes writing courses at the freshman and sophomore levels; a wellness literacy requirement to enhance students' knowledge and management of their personal health in all its dimensions; a quantitative literacy component to develop reasoning and numerical skills; a science inquiry theme to introduce students to concepts related to the scientific processes of studying natural phenomena; courses carrying designations in Fine Arts, Historical Studies, Literary Studies, and Social Science; and courses in the categories of Sustainability and Climate Literacy, Intercultural Literacy, and Humanity and Its Systems. The General Education Program also incorporates a Writing in the Discipline course and a Senior Capstone Experience in a student's major.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position requires teaching four sections of UCO 1200 First Year Seminar during each semester, and service to the First Year Seminar Program, the General Education Program, University College, Appalachian State University, the instructor's academic discipline, and/or the community.

Suggested Salary Range Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
