Associate Director of Athletic Development

This position reports to the Director of Athletic Development and is a front-line fundraiser for Davidson athletics. Candidates for the role will bring professional experiences that will contribute towards shaping the strategies and direction of athletic fundraising at Davidson. The role will be given leadership responsibilities over specialty areas relevant across the department such as scholarship development, co-supervision of work study staff, or other duties relevant to prior experience and background.

Success in the role requires the ability to: build relationships with alumni, parents and friends of the programs to bring financial support for athletic causes; represent the needs shared by coaches and staff to bring success to Davidson College's 21 NCAA D1 athletic teams; manage a portfolio of donors ranging in financial capacity and background; and contribute to crafting creative, informative and persuasive messages and videos in support of annual giving to a group of assigned teams.

This position will actively manage between 150-175 athletic prospects through the stages of qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. In addition to direct fundraising with prospects, this person will serve as a subject matter expert to support colleagues in Major Gifts, the Fund for Davidson and the Office of Parent Giving to maximize proposals to athletic initiatives at the $50,000 level and above. This position will attend sporting competitions and related events for the purposes of building relationships with and stewarding supporters of our teams. Travel is also required for the cultivation of donors and occasional attendance at away matches or conference tournaments.

Job Duties:



  • Direct Solicitation/Stewardship: Responsible for managing 150 prospective donors, conducting 120 donor visits throughout the fiscal year, with a majority in-person. The visits will primarily be with prospects focused on athletic giving. This role will work to identify and solicit donors for athletic projects including scholarships, team operating funds, capital projects, and other initiatives that arise, soliciting five-figure gifts regularly, and collaborating on and/or directly soliciting six-to-seven-figure gifts annually.
  • The person in this role will maintain a precise record of donor contact through Blackbaud CRM and prepare timely call reports. Training on the division's software systems will be provided
  • Work with the director and others to identify potential seven-figure prospects to endow scholarships and head coaching positions or provide leadership gifts for other projects.
  • Coordinate with the athletics business office and other campus partners to track scholarship levels for all of Davidson College's athletic teams, helping to devise a strategy for raising funds for expendable scholarships in the short term, and endowed scholarships over the period of the next campaign.
  • Attend and support events as needed: As a member of the DAF team, the position requires regular support of events including, but not limited to Fast Break Club, Tailgate on the Turf, Homecoming, Athletics Hall of Fame, Dr. Tom Scott Golf Tournament, or team-specific gatherings.
  • Serve as sport liaison for multiple athletic teams. This person will become a subject matter expert on five or six teams through regular meetings with the coaching staff and attendance at sporting events. Through this expertise, the staff member will partner with the offices of planned giving, parent giving, the major gifts team and the fund for Davidson to create a pipeline of prospects and work to assist those colleagues to close related gifts.
  • Night and weekend work required related to sporting events throughout the school year, with adjustments to schedule possible to accommodate.
  • This position is currently eligible to work remotely 1-2 days per week (subject to change) upon approval from the supervisor.


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree. Minimum three years of athletics, development or related work experience. Advanced proficiency in oral and written communication skills, organizational efficiency, self-motivation, the capability to manage multiple projects at one time, and comfort with travel. Candidates must be able to understand and articulate the value added from NCAA Division I athletics at an academically challenging liberal arts college.

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree. A career path that includes oversight of major projects and contributing to strategic decision making. Five-plus years of development or related work experience. A proven track record of soliciting and securing five-figure gift commitments and above.
