Mental Health Laboratory Supervisor (Day Shift)

Overview

The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of one or more departments in the technical clinical section of the laboratory under the general direction of the Laboratory Director and the V.P. of Operations. The Supervisor is accountable for supervising technical personnel, making sure the operations are performed as documented by trained personnel to ensure accurate reporting, and identifying and implementing process improvements. The Supervisor shall be on the laboratory premises during all hours in which tests are performed or be available by telephone or electronic means. All laboratory results are reviewed by the laboratory director or qualified personnel prior to a patient report being issued.

Responsibility



  1. Ensuring laboratory compliance with technical, operational, administrative, and safety policies.
  2. Development and implementation of departmental technical procedures in accordance with the laboratory's policies and procedures.
  3. Ensuring participation of all department personnel in the laboratory's quality assurance plan, adhering to quality control and preventive maintenance policies and appropriately documenting these activities.
  4. Being available to testing personnel at all times testing and reporting are performed to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with the laboratory's policies and procedures. Whenever the supervisor is not available, a qualified designee must be available to the technical staff.
  5. Monitoring testing systems to ensure that acceptable levels of performance are maintained and ensuring appropriate corrective action is taken whenever the test system deviates from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  6. Troubleshooting and identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or reporting of test results by initiating corrective action and using the defined electronic system to make the required management notification.
  7. Working with the Training Coordinator to ensure the development of an effective departmental training program in accordance with laboratory policy.
  8. Evaluating employee performance to ensure acceptable levels of competency and performance are maintained and documented and for taking appropriate promotion or corrective actions related to staff performance.
  9. Ensuring that no staff members are excluded from participating in proficiency testing according to CAP/CLIA requirements.
  10. Actively participating in successful and timely completion of training and competency assessment as outlined in the laboratory and departmental training programs.
  11. Where competency has not been approved by supervision, will work under the direct supervision of an employee competent on the task.
  12. Acts in the CLIA defined role as "Supervisor" on technical issues in the day-to-day operations of the laboratory.
  13. Participates in or leads department and cross functional teams to resolve problems or implement projects.
  14. Serve as a trainer on technical processes both within and between groups.
  15. Ensuring that all staff members participate in continuing education according to accepted laboratory standards.
  16. Planning, including staffing, scheduling and ordering of materials, to ensure the department's ability to meet the companywide production goals.
  17. Hiring, development and retention of qualified staff members.
  18. Annually evaluating and documenting the performance of all testing personnel.


Shift: Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm

Qualifications



  1. Lab Supervisors working in Technical departments:

    1. Bachelor's degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science with 4 years pertinent lab experience,

  2. OR
  3. Master's degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science with 2 years pertinent lab experience,
  4. OR
  5. Doctoral degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science with 1 year pertinent lab experience.
  6. For California personnel:

    1. CLS or CGMBS license issued by California

  7. AND
  8. 1 year of pertinent lab experience as licensed personnel.
  9. Lab Supervisors working in Non-Technical departments:

    1. Bachelor's degree preferred but not required.
    2. One year of pertinent lab experience.
    3. Management experience preferred but not required.

  10. Maintain familiarity with the field's concepts, practices, and procedures and make recommendations for future scientific directions in relation to variant classification.


Physical Requirements Lifting Requirements - light work or exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently.Physical Requirements - stationary positioning, moving, operating, ascending/descending, communicating, and observing. Use of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential job functions.
