Calibration Scientist Group Manager

Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) seeks an experienced Calibration Scientist Group Manager supporting NASA's remote sensing observatory program. This observatory program has provided over 50 years of moderate resolution data spanning the Visible to Thermal Infrared wavelengths. 2 observatories are currently on-orbit.

The qualified Calibration Scientist and Manager is needed to oversee a team of calibration engineers in both contractual and technical duties. The technical calibration activities include but are not limited to:

• On-orbit interactions with Flight Operations groups to schedule and acquire the appropriate calibration data and support observatory anomalies impacting instrument performance.
• Processing and assessing various calibrations to characterize instrument performance and deriving periodic calibration parameter updates.
• Developing software tools to supplement and enhance pipeline processing capabilities on physical servers and cloud platforms.
• Supporting the validation of higher-level science data products as well as analysis ready data products.
• Chairing and organizing technical meetings.
• Formulating and share scientific results including communication with collaborators at group meetings; oral and poster presentations at conferences; and contributions to outreach activities and publishing in refereed research journals.

Required Qualifications

• M.S. plus 10 years or B.S plus 13 years in Engineering, Applied Physics, or related field.
• Experience with the calibration and characterization of observatory remote sensing instruments and measurements.
• Image processing background and proficient software development skills including database queries and processing HDF formatted datasets.
• Programming skills include Python, C, IDL, MATLAB, LINUX, PostGRES, ORACLE.
• Supervisory experience leading technical teams.
• Excellent organizational, communication and people skills overseeing a large group of colleagues.
• Experience in NASA contracting environment.
• U.S. Citizenship required.

Desired Qualifications:

• Broad knowledge of NASA/GSFC projects and missions and project management practices and standards.
• Experience supporting development of proposals for NASA contracts.

The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
