Job Overview

The Department of Geography and GIS at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, seeks a fellow in geography, geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI), and spatial data science for its Charles Henry Turner Post-Doctoral Program. Named in honor of Charles Henry Turner, one of the first African-American students to earn a graduate degree at the University of Cincinnati, the Program seeks to recruit talented post-doctoral fellows who will contribute cutting-edge research, expertise, and skill sets that propel innovation and enhance student experience. This fellow will join theDepartment of Geography & GIS and Digital Futures under the mentorship ofDr. Diego CuadrosandDr. Xi Chen. The role combines innovative research, teaching, and outreach to address critical challenges in natural and social sciences, includinghydrology and environmental resource management, public health, urban digital twin, or data visualization.

This position is a full-time, 24-month in-residence position at the University of Cincinnati, commencing August 15, 2025 and concluding August 14, 2027.

Advised and hosted in the Department of Geography & GIS, the Turner postdoctoral researcher is expected to contribute intellectually to the department and to the Data Visualization Laboratory at the Digital Futures Center, contributing to projects that emphasize innovative and effective visual communication of geospatial and AI-driven analyses. The fellow will also be expected to design and teach two distinct semester-long courses over the two-year period.

Unique to the Turner Post-Doctoral Program is the possibility of a being hired in the Department of Geography & GIS as a tenure-track appointment in the future.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct research experiments in a particular field within the pre-determined research scope and methodology.
  • Gather and analyze data and develop new ideas that promote current research.
  • Prepare data summaries, reports, manuscripts and presentations of research results.
  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentation; may assist in grant writing.
  • Keep informed of developments in field to maintain and enhance professional expertise.
  • Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies, as needed.
  • May teach techniques to others, train, and mentor junior research staff.
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities.
  • Play an active role in seeking career and research advice, both from the faculty supervisor and from other faculty members as well.
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum qualifications for the Turner post-doc fellow include the following:



  1. PhD by the hire date in Geography, Remote Sensing, Earth Sciences, or in a closely related field
  2. Background in GIS, remote sensing,hydrology, environmental resource management, public health, urban digital twin, or data visualization
  3. Expertise in GeoAI/machine learning techniques and geospatial tools
  4. Proficiency in Python/R, big data platforms, and GeoAI/machine learning frameworks
  5. Experience in managing large data sets

Required Education

Doctoral Degree in the appropriate field or discipline, or the recognized terminal degree

Required Experience

  • In-depth knowledge of specialized field, process or discipline.
  • May require experience with specialized software programs.

Terms of appointment:

In addition to full salary of $56,000 per year, the post-doctoral fellow will also receive an additional $10,000 fund for research and professional development activities.

Additional desired qualifications for the Turner post-doc fellow include the following:



  1. Strong publication record and commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration
  2. Experience in applying and securing research funding
  3. Experience with cloud computing and data visualization tools
  4. Familiarity with ethical AI practices and geospatial data privacy
  5. Teaching experience and course design skills
