Tool Room Team Lead Chatsworth, California, United States JOB SUMMARY: We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Tool Room Lead to oversee the daily operations of our tool room, ensuring the efficient and precise production, maintenance, and repair of tooling and components. This position requires expertise in operating and supervising work on manual mills, lathes, CNC mills and lathes, tool regrinders, and surface grinders. The Tool Room Lead will coordinate workflow, manage tooling inventory, and ensure quality standards while leading a team of machinists and toolmakers.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee and manage the daily operations of the tool room, ensuring optimal workflow and productivity.
- Program, set up, and operate manual and CNC machining equipment, including mills, lathes, grinders, and regrinders.
- Supervise and train toolmakers and machinists on proper machine operation, safety protocols, and best practices.
- Maintain and repair tooling, fixtures, and dies to ensure continued production efficiency.
- Read and interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, and technical specifications to create precision components.
- Monitor and maintain tooling inventory, ordering supplies as needed to prevent production delays.
- Ensure all machining work meets strict quality standards and tolerances.
- Troubleshoot machining and tooling issues, implementing solutions to minimize downtime.
- Work collaboratively with engineers, production staff, and quality control to improve manufacturing processes.
- Enforce safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free tool room environment.
SKILLS:
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years in a tool room or machining environment, with leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency in operating manual and CNC mills, lathes, surface grinders, and tool regrinders.
- Ability to program and set up CNC machines (knowledge of G-code and CAD/CAM software is a plus).
- Expertise in precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, etc.).
- Problem-Solving: Excellent troubleshooting skills for machining and tooling issues.
- Leadership: Proven ability to manage a team, provide training, and coordinate workloads efficiently.
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and schematics.
- Attention to Detail: Strong focus on precision, quality, and adherence to tight tolerances.
- Safety & Compliance: Knowledge of machine shop safety regulations and OSHA standards.
- Computer Skills: Ability to compose and communicate through e-mail. Microsoft Excel and Word knowledge necessary.
Education/Experience Required:
- High school diploma or GED required; Technical degree or certification in machining, tool & die, or CNC programming preferred.
- Apprenticeship or journeyman toolmaker certification is a plus.
Work Environment:
- Primarily a machine shop environment with exposure to noise, coolants, and metal shavings.
- Requires standing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, and manual dexterity for tool handling.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to effectively interface with staff and leadership, i.e. strong interpersonal & communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to be accountable for achieving required results
Note: Physical job requirements may include standing, use of hands to assemble and or carry out job functions as well as sitting, lifting, carrying, bending and stooping during the course of the job.
