SENIOR LEGAL INVESTIGATOR

Department of Law

(Additional vacancies are possible pending budget approval)

Starting Annual Salary: $66,612

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5.

Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under general supervision, performs investigative work in the Law Department involving lawsuits filed against the City, and performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties:

* Conducts field investigations to obtain factual information for litigation matters involving civil rights claims, such as malicious prosecution, due process violations and excessive force and claims arising from personal injury and property damage

* Locates and interviews witnesses, potential litigants and other individuals with possible information relative to lawsuits in order to determine and record their formal statements to be used in defense of claims against the City and/or its employees

* Investigates incident scenes, accident sites, gathers physical evidence, and conducts covert surveillance to gather information to provide support for investigative results

* Utilizes photographic, video, and electronic equipment to document investigative findings

* Contacts and confers with representatives from City departments and governmental agencies to request records and files

* Prepares narrative summaries and other reports documenting completed investigations

* Testifies in court regarding investigative findings

* Trains, orientates, and oversees the work of new investigative staff on compliance and investigative practices and procedures

* Performs background checks on involved parties, witnesses and potential witnesses

* Serves witnesses and other entities with subpoenas

* Maintains case records and related documents

Hours: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

(Shift may vary due to the needs of the operation)

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or a related field, plus two years of legal investigation experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

NOTE: A copy of your official transcripts, professional license, or training certificates will be required at the time of interview, if applicable.

Selection Requirements: This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or skills assessment test as a part of the interview. The interviewed bidders possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement. The interviewed external candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.
