Job Summary

In conjunction with the leadership team of Respiratory Services, the Critical Care Respiratory Specialist is responsible for direct oversight of the care of Critical Care patients. The Critical Care Respiratory Specialist serves as a resource to the Management team, staff, and interdisciplinary members alike demonstrating expertise in the planning and delivery of specialized patient care. Conducts in-services and workshops to enhance knowledge and skills of house staff and nursing personnel.

Typical Duties



  • Develop and implement quality assurance measures, including, but not limited to medication reports, charting accuracy, and appropriate patient care.
  • Demonstrates expertise in the execution of daily patient care, providing collaboration, direction and instruction.
  • Provides expertise in the planning and delivery of special patient care problems.
  • Acts as liaison /clinical coordinator for respiratory care student programs.
  • Analyzes patient care plans for evidence of documentation of standards of practice, shares findings with Leadership/Director.
  • Collaborates in setting unit standard of care and monitors indicators of quality.
  • Coordinates the evaluation of new equipment /products.
  • Provides orientation, education and training.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates orientation programs for employees.
  • Provides direct input into staff development for clinical ladder progression.
  • Provides input to staff performance appraisals and annual competencies.
  • Participates in daily rounds and facilitates a care plan for Intensive Care Unit patients.
  • Prepares house staff and nursing personnel by providing workshops and educational in-services to enhance knowledge and skills relevant to practice, as needed.
  • Enhances job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional organizations.
  • Maintains clinical competencies and education records of Respiratory Care staff and other hospital personnel as necessary.
  • Participates on task forces, committees, and various interdisciplinary meetings.
  • Participates in monthly staff meetings and leadership meetings with to inform, educate, and collect feedback.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with Two (2) years of full time clinical experience in Acute Care OR Masters of Science degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited college or university is required (Must provide official transcripts at time of interview)
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program is required (Must provide official transcripts at time of interview)
  • Must be currently registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is required (Must provide proof at time of interview)
  • Must be licensed by the State of Illinois for Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) is required (Must provide proof at time of interview)
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification is required (Must provide proof at time of interview)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification is required (Must provide proof at time of interview)


Preferred Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in a healthcare field from an accredited college or university is preferred (Must provide official transcripts at time of interview)
  • Five (5) years of experience in a Critical Care clinical role is preferred
  • Current Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (NPS) Certification is preferred
  • Current Pediatric Life Support (PALS) Certification is preferred
  • Current Adult Critical Care Respiratory Therapist (ACCS) Certification is preferred
  • Current Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) Certification is preferred
  • Current Respiratory Pulmonary Function Technician (RPFT) Certification is preferred
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification is preferred
