DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a skilled Marine Technician 3.

The Marine Technician, while at sea is responsible for deck functions that include preparing, deploying and recovering scientific instruments.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and assist leadership in supporting the activities of a diverse coastal observing laboratory, including an active field program.

  • Serve as a facilities representative for maintenance and repair of CORDC spaces, containers, vehicles, boats, and assets.

  • Supports and oversee lab safety and hazardous waste disposal procedures.

  • Operates and maintains oceanographic sampling equipment for collection of geological, physical, chemical and acoustic data.

  • Responsible for operating deck equipment including cranes, A-frames, winches, capstans, and small boats.

  • Coordinates logistics related to using oceanographic instrumentation at sea, including working with ship, port, engineering, and scientific personnel.

  • Provides work direction as needed while at sea.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in natural or physical science, environmental studies and one (1) year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • At-sea experience including the preparation, deployment and recovery of oceanographic instruments and small boat experience.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety procedures and regulations while working with machinery on land and at sea.

  • Proficient in oceanographic data collection and processing techniques.

  • Captain small boats in various weather conditions

  • Knowledge of safety training and requirements

  • Work at sea for extended periods and travel abroad

  • Utilize available resources efficiently; including electronic and mechanical test equipment, heavy machinery, machine tools, computers, lifting and transportation equipment

  • Knowledge of Federal and state OSHA regulations, as applied to boating operations

  • Experience reviewing safety, security, and asset management policies and procedures

  • Comprehensive working knowledge / understanding of a specific EH&S field including related laws and regulations, and general understanding of all EH&S fields.

  • Demonstrate a capacity to work cooperatively with others, in small groups and sometimes for extended periods

  • Employ proper interactive skills while assisting scientists, engineers, technicians, students, temporary personnel and machinist

  • Ability to build tools and fixtures used to create better production methods

  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience working with machine shop equipment including the grinder, cutter, drill machines and power hand tools

  • Understanding of and ability to operate electronic test equipment, Digtial Multi Meters(DMM), Oscilloscope, A/C load testing equipment

  • Understanding of material types, i.e. grades of aluminum, steel, plastic and and their basic properties regarding corrosion and UV resistance

  • Technical experience with hoists, cranes, pier based small boating operations, and pier infrastructure and safety.

  • Strong time management and follow up skills. Excellent organizational skills including the ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload, proven ability to prioritize and schedule experiments and duties to maximize efficiency.

  • Knowledge of local ocean conditions as applied to boat usage and/or shore diving operations.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

1) Must be able to spend up to 2 months at sea, 2 weeks in succession, under adverse conditions.

2) U.S. Passport required for seagoing operations and travel to foreign ports.

3) Will be required to hold valid driver's license and have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures.

4) Must be able to work overtime and irregular hours.

5) Must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

6) Must be able to obtain and maintain DoD Secret Clearance.

7) Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $66,482 - $106,864 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.84 - $51.18

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
