Job Summary

The Attending Physician VI will diagnose and treat occupational injuries and illnesses, perform medical evaluations including pre-preplacement, fitness for duty, return to work and infection control examinations and provide initial triage, ongoing assessment, referral and follow up as needed for EHS cases. These services will be provided on-site at the Employee Health Service clinic unless otherwise specified by the Medical Director of Employee Health Services. The Attending Physician VI of the Employee Health Service will participate in the education of medical students, mid-level practitioners and ancillary personnel and will adhere to all federal, local and department rules and regulations.

Typical Duties


  • Performs comprehensive and thorough medical examinations and health assessments including for pre-placement, return to work, and fitness for duty.


  • Counsels and educates employees on all EHS related concerns.


  • Refers employees to Employee Assistance Program as appropriate.


  • Prepares case summaries and Workers' Compensation summaries as needed; participates in case management reviews with Director.



  • Reviews laboratory and radiologic reports and arranges follow up as needed.


  • Serves as Medical Review Officer (MRO) as needed.


  • Consults with supervisors of employees on employee workability and activity restrictions for employees with occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.


  • Attends Department meetings and Employee Health staff meetings on a regular basis


  • Performs exposure and workplace risk assessments as needed.


  • Consults with subspecialty physicians and rehabilitation staff on case management as needed.


  • Completes timely, accurate, and thorough medical record documentation as required to meet appropriate department and/or hospital guidelines.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university.


  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Preventative or Occupational Medicine prior to starting employment


  • Licensed as a physician in the State of Illinois or eligibility to obtain license prior to starting employment.


  • Illinois and Federal controlled substance license or eligibility to obtain license prior to starting employment


  • Three (3) years of residency or other post graduate medical training in a field related to occupational medicine or primary care.


  • Medical Review Officer (MRO) certification

Preferred Qualifications


  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Occupational and Environmental Medicine


  • One (1) year of experience after formal training in an occupational medicine/employee health setting is highly desirable.


  • Active Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics


  • Current knowledge of the principles and practices of occupational medicine


  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with all levels of staff


  • Ability to perform detailed medical evaluations including preplacement examinations, return to work assessments, fitness for duty determinations, medical record reviews including reviews of Workers Compensation cases, and MRO verification of workplace drug testing


  • Ability to order tests and interpret diagnostic, radiologic and laboratory results


  • Ability to use and extract information from electronic records systems and databases


  • Flexibility and adaptability in performing work duties

    Physical and Environmental Demands

    This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
