Working independently and under the very general supervision of Principal Investigator (or Research Manager), and in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, conducts a variety of routine and non-routine in vivo experiments using mice at a professional level within the Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases. Collaborates with other members of the research team. Calculates, transcribes, and analyzes data using statistical methods.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists lab members with scientific in vivo experiments in mice including breeding, administration of treatments, behavioral analysis, necropsy, biochemical and pathological analyses, and -omics analyses.
- Independently performs routine and non-routine experiments, which are moderate to complex, including behavioral, pathological and biochemical analyses of mice and -omics analysis.
- Organizes, calculates, transcribes and analyzes data derived from experiments, recorded daily in an electronic lab notebook. Performs data analysis using statistical software. Presents data at weekly laboratory meetings. Submits weekly update in a timely manner.
- Participates in the preparation of manuscripts.
- Troubleshoots and communicates technical problems as they arise; identifies alternative approaches and/or modifies existing techniques for better efficiency.
- Assists with preparation of laboratory reagents and chemicals and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
- Assists with the mouse colony as needed.
- Assists with orders and maintains supply inventory in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Assists with orientation and training of new technicians and students in laboratory organization, mouse-related work and safety policies. Acts as a liaison in safety issues for administrators and informs laboratory personnel of policy changes, guidelines and concerns. Maintains established department policies, procedures, safety, environmental and infection control.
- All other duties, as assigned.

Education:

BA or BS in a psychology and/or biology required.

Experience:

One year of post-grad research experience.

Prior experience with mouse work required.

Optional skills include brain tissue preparation, immunostaining of brain sections, image analysis, statistical analyses. Also, motivation to learn new lab skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and statistical software.
  • Experience in mouse handling and necropsy.
  • Sound analytical and organizational skills.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to logically and effectively structure tasks, set priorities and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data statistically and logically present it .
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and work effectively with others in the lab and external collaborators.
  • We are seeking stability for at least 2 years.

Working Conditions:

No heavy lifting or long-term standing.
