Job Summary The laboratory technician supports the Physical Science department by obtaining, organizing, preparing, setting up, and maintaining laboratory materials for astronomy, geology, physics, and physical sciences courses. The technician is responsible for ensuring all materials are in good repair and appropriately provided on time to the instructors. The technician receives and maintains supplies and equipment, as well as establishes and maintains equipment maintenance and inventory records. The technician adheres to and ensures compliance with applicable policies and procedures. Additional Information Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body. Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gasses, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood or other body fluids); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or threatening environment); and moderate exposure to extreme temperatures or intense noise. Essential Functions 30% - Supports laboratory programs and initiates lab set-ups and take-downs for physics, astronomy, geology, and physical science courses through coordination with appropriate faculty 30% - Maintains, stores, and inventories supplies and equipment, including the development and update of lab setup sheets 15% - Performs routine cleaning of labs & supplies as necessary 10% - Analyzes requirements for supplies and initiates the purchase of equipment 10% - Provides work direction to students or temporary workers 5% - Other duties as assigned Desired Qualifications Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and one year of laboratory experience such as maintaining equipment, facility space, supplies, or other resources used for laboratory purposes in the area of assignment. OR An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above, sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job, such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.
