Description

Summary

This summer enrichment coding class welcomes students, catering to both beginners and those with prior coding experience. Students will explore a variety of programming languages, including Python, Java, HTML, and Scratch. The course is designed to provide an inclusive and supportive environment where students can learn from one another. Beginners will receive step-by-step guidance, while more advanced students can progress at their own pace, diving deeper into complex projects.

The summer enrichment robotics class welcomes students, catering to both beginners and those with prior robotics experience. Students will explore a variety of robots, largely through VEX IQ and VEX EXP. Familiarity with these robots will be essential to successful instruction. Students will work in small groups and will compete with one another.

Under the direction of the Summer Program Director at Geffen Academy at UCLA, the Educator will create the courses of study, prepare materials, and deliver excellent Summer Coding and Summer Robotics enrichment courses for Geffen Academy's Summer Program students. The classes are 90 minutes long and take place over a 3-week period. The course will be taught in-person on Geffen Academy's campus.

* Create opportunities for students and build excitement in coding and in robotics.

* Create a learning environment where students feel safe, welcome, and challenged.

* Be available to students and parents for any and all department related issues.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications

* Must have a Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in a related field and a strong background in secondary education with a clear understanding and embrace of the Geffen Academy's mission, vision and values.

* Strong technical knowledge of skills and strategies and the ability to teach these skills to students.

* Should have familiarity with educational management systems including Blackbaud, Google Classroom, and Zoom.

* Unquestionable personal integrity, excellent judgment, sound instincts, diplomacy and patience, and strong work ethic.

* Strong background in secondary education, including creating and producing high quality curriculum and educational programming, with a clear understanding and embrace of the school's mission, vision, and values.

* The ability to think and act strategically combined with a strong commitment to providing an excellent and accessible educational experience for each student.

* Must be self-directed and able to effectively prioritize and handle multiple tasks subject to frequent interruption.

* Must be capable of developing and sustaining close, effective working relationships with other staff and educators.

* Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills to articulate and explain complex issues to the Geffen Academy senior staff, families, and students.

* Highly perceptive and intuitive.

* Exceptional listening skills and sensitivity to the needs of others.

* Collegially inclined with peers; a willing communicator and collaborator; enthusiastic team player.

* Comfortable working within a fast-paced summer learning environment.
