Luthier Instructor

Northampton Community College is seeking a skilled and passionate Luthier Instructor to join our Luthier Program. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the construction, repair, and maintenance of acoustic and/or electric guitars. This position involves teaching students the intricate art of guitar making, fostering their craftsmanship, and inspiring a new generation of luthiers.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver comprehensive curriculum for luthiery courses, including both acoustic and electric guitar building.
  • Provide hands-on instruction in guitar construction, repair, and maintenance techniques.
  • Guide students through the entire process of guitar building, from design and material selection to finishing and setup.
  • Maintain a safe and organized workshop environment, ensuring all tools and equipment are properly used and maintained.
  • Evaluate and assess student progress, providing constructive feedback and support.
  • Stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in luthiery and incorporate them into the curriculum.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to the development of the Arts and Crafts program.
  • Advise students on career opportunities and professional development in the field of luthiery.
  • Foster a creative and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and collaboration.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a professional luthier with expertise in building both acoustic and electric guitars.
  • Strong knowledge of guitar construction techniques, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Previous teaching experience, preferably at the community college level, is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to inspire and mentor students of diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • A degree or certification in luthiery, woodworking, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • CNC machining experience is preferred but not required.
