Job Summary

The duration will be approximately two months to start; possible extension to a total of four months.

Senior Admitting Worker functions are under the direction of the Patient Care Unit Manger and Assistant Patient Care Manager. They are responsible for registering patients upon arrival for services and after triage by the nurse. The registration process includes gathering financial and demographic information and entering it into the computer system quickly and accurately. The Admitting Worker must also pull records from recent visits, process patient admissions, order x-rays and ultasound tests, and perform other duties as outlined in the job description. The admitting worker intiates emergency pager system as directed by the Charge RN and performs daily testing. The admitting worker completes other unit duties as needed.

Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, physicians, other disciplines and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner.

All Senior Admitting Workers have a critical influence on a patients' health care experience in our Medical Center and must act as an ambassador of services. The incumbent is responsible to meet patient needs, demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills, and foster a harmonious work environment in which high quality patient care and customer service are consistently provided. Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, physicians, other disciplines and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner.
Duties to include:

  • Interviews patients to confirm patient demographic information and financial insurance data.
  • Receives and relays messages from patients, families and staff to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  • Prioritizes and responds effectively to requests that occur simultaneously.
  • Gives current, accurate and complete report to oncoming Admitting worker/Charge Nurse.
  • Initiates appropriate procedures for all emergencies.
  • Conducts oneself in a calm, controlled, and professional manner when working with patients, customers, and clients.
  • Cooperates with co-workers/supervisors/managers to maintain a productive and harmonious work environment (e.g., communicates problems, contributes to resolution of conflicts within department/unit or work group.
  • Refers any complex financial arrangements or authorization requirements to financial counselor.
  • Complies with the Service Excellence Standards displaying empathy and sensitivity in interactions with patients, families, visitors and other staff.
  • Explains financial policies and screens patients for maximum liability, involves financial counseling, as appropriate
  • Actively participates in staff meetings to assimilate changes in procedures, new program requirements or training reviews of existing procedures
  • Meets the productivity and accuracy standards of the admitting department
  • Maintains confidentiality of department and Medical Center information
  • Confirms demographic and financial information from patient for registration.
  • Correctly completes downtime registrations for input into computer.
  • Completes all forms and assembles chart.
  • Verifies insurance eligibility and benefits and enters data in the registration and insurance screens.
  • Sets up the appropriate account specific to the patient in the IDX computer system
  • Admits newborns and completes appropriate material for the ICN.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality according to the HIPAA guidelines
  • Answers patients' questions regarding the registration process. Refers any queries to the supervisor, nursing or physician staff, as appropriate.
  • Ensures that all appropriate documentation is noted into the IDX system.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • General:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Analytical Skills:
  • Ability to problem solve; ability to analyze data and recommend changes.
  • Awareness and proper handling of confidential, sensitive information
  • Interpersonal Skills:
  • Must have strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a culturally diverse staff and patient/family population.
  • Must possess empathy and respect for family dynamics.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Office Machine Skills:
  • Must be meticulous with data entry.
  • Must have basic PC skills in MS Office Suite.
  • Medical Terminology: Specific to Women's Health Preferred.
  • Oral/Written Communication:
  • Articulate and concise oral communication. Ability to write clearly and concisely.
