We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Test Engineer to join our team, supporting the development and testing of automotive evaporative emission canisters and carbon products. In this role, you will be responsible for executing and managing tests, ensuring compliance with industry standards, troubleshooting equipment, and leading projects to improve testing capabilities. Your ability to analyze complex data, troubleshoot failures, and maintain a high standard of lab practices will be essential in supporting our automotive development efforts. This position is on-site located in North Charleston, SC. How you will impact Ingevity:
- Perform various tests on automotive evaporative emission canisters to support both customer needs and product development.
- Manage internal research programs supporting new product design, regulatory efforts, and intellectual property strategies.
- Lead projects to install and configure specialized testing equipment in the automotive lab, including defining specifications, design requirements, and installation procedures.
- Review and approve test results from automotive testing, ensuring data accuracy and compliance with operating standards, as needed.
- Ensure all test procedures meet IATF 16949 requirements and assist efforts to continuously improve lab practices and operational procedures.
- Oversee the quality management system of the Auto lab and engage in both internal and external audits of quality systems.
- Participate in pilot trial campaigns in both lab and off-site locations to assist with new product development and testing.
- Play an active role in Departmental safety efforts, including participation in safety meetings and committees.
- Execute monthly safety inspections of the technical center and automotive lab, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Lead and assist with non-automotive carbon testing applications and additional testing requirements as needed.
What you need to succeed:
- Minimum Bachelor's degree in an engineering field (Mechanical, Chemical, or related), with 2+ years of related experience preferred.
- Strong technical background with the ability to manage projects independently from start to completion.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), and experience in using pivot tables for data analysis.
- Strong analytical skills for interpreting test data and deriving meaningful conclusions.
- Experience in troubleshooting and debugging test equipment, as well as identifying and addressing equipment issues.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze test data, identify trends, and assess compliance with standards, while also identifying areas for improvement.
- Root Cause Analysis expertise, and familiarity with Lean Six Sigma tools (DMAIC, etc.) for problem-solving.
- Experience performing Design of Experiments (DOE) and capability studies is a plus.
- 3D printing experience and knowledge of CAD-type engineering software are helpful.
- Aptitude for mechanical work, including tasks such as process tubing, electrical/electronic wiring, and assisting in building specialized test equipment.
- Familiarity with data systems management and experience with tools such as LabView is preferred.
- Experience with general lab safety practices, including 5S, and maintaining clean and organized workspaces.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, late evenings, and occasional weekends.
- Willingness to travel 10-15% as required.
