The Automotive Lab Manager will oversee and coordinate the daily operations of all automotive testing equipment utilized for generating data that supports and enhances the marketing and sales of specialty chemical products. In this capacity, you will be tasked with the prompt execution and management of tests, ensuring adherence to industry standards, and facilitating projects aimed at enhancing testing capabilities. This position necessitates proficient supervision of laboratory personnel to guarantee compliance with regulatory requirements and to cultivate a safe and constructive work atmosphere. This position is on-site located in North Charleston, SC.

How you will impact Ingevity:

  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and calibrate all testing equipment used for automotive carbon testing and guarantee its safe operation.
  • Source and manage outside contractors and vendors.
  • Uphold standard operating procedures (SOPs) and facilitate training related to the laboratory.
  • Confirm test procedures meet IATF 16949 requirements and lead efforts to continuously improve lab practices and operational procedures.
  • Manage the documentation of all safety incidents/near misses and use input to improve workplace safety.
  • Attain expertise in automotive evaporative emissions technology and manage the data produced in the automotive laboratory. Generate concise test reports upon completion of tests and submit a monthly summary of completed work, analyzing trends and quantifying the value provided to our customers.
  • Review lab expenses to ensure costs remain within the established budget.
  • Manage and adapt a flexible schedule to maximize output and efficiency from all automotive testing equipment and personnel.
  • Coordinate daily activities of Laboratory Technicians to ensure quality of work and achieve department goals.
  • Support internal research programs assisting new product design, regulatory efforts, and intellectual property strategies.
  • Develop new tests and equipment in co-operation with Engineering team to support and develop the market needs.
  • Coordinate with the Ingevity laboratory in China and provide a strong link for data management and continuous improvement.
  • Possess strong skills relative to internal customer service, communication, computer applications, and process control.

What you need to succeed:

  • An Associates or Bachelor's degree (Bachelor's preferred) in an engineering field (Mechanical, Chemical, or related), with 2+ years of related experience preferred.
  • Prior lab operation and supervisory experience including coaching and performance reviews of direct reports is desired.
  • Experience utilizing quantitative and qualitative testing and research methodologies is required
  • Technical knowledge in adsorption and gasoline vapor emission control experience is desired.
  • Understanding of Quality Systems/ISO is required.
  • Must be able to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of internal and external contacts at all levels.
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and data analysis.
  • Experience in troubleshooting, maintaining, and improving test equipment.
  • Aptitude for mechanical work, including tasks such as process tubing, electrical/electronic wiring, and assisting in building specialized test equipment.
  • Experience with general lab safety practices, including 5S, and maintaining clean and organized workspaces.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends.
