Position Purpose
The Custodial Afternoon/Evening Shift Manager oversees the daily operations of the custodial team during their assigned shift(s). This role ensures a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment for students, faculty, and staff. The Shift Manager coordinates and supervises a team of supervisors to ensure compliance with safety and sanitation protocols and maintains high standards of cleanliness across all assigned areas. They act as a critical point of contact between custodial staff, squad leaders, and building occupants, fostering a positive work environment and delivering excellent service.
The incumbent provides the requisite leadership in managing the day-to-day management of custodial services across designated shift(s), including hiring, onboarding, and special projects. Also manages aspects of the personnel, staffing, equipment, consumable supply requirements for their shift(s), and vendor relations necessary to provide efficient delivery of Custodial Services to the campus. Collaborates with College stakeholders and groups to coordinate and support academic and research activity, athletics, and real estate. Manages special events, Commencement, and Reunions, annual dorm turn-over, and directs the custodial response for campus emergencies, including snow removal, floods, fires, and building access and scheduling.

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant area required.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Minimum seven years of experience in hospitality, higher education or healthcare.
  • Minimum of five years' of experience training ten or more custodial or housekeeping employees.
  • Custodial or housekeeping experience for an educational or medical institution, health care or residential operations > 6 million gross square foot
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team-based environment.
  • Experience working in a bargaining unit environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in estimating, scheduling and managing custodial or housekeeping services provided by individuals and large groups and experience managing 70 FTE.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, DEI, and student environment. Must be able to create/revise/adapt standard operating procedures (SOP's) as needed.
  • Working knowledge of applicable safety procedures (trade) related to custodial or housekeeping services.
  • Understanding of inventory and the ability to build a vendor delivery system.
  • Proven organization, leadership, and time management skills. Experience in planning and implementing short- and long-range goals, organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and professionally with customers and direct reports.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative, team-centered environment and handle complex personnel matters in a sensitive but assertive manner.
  • Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Must be willing to work different shifts based on operational needs.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with standard business-related software required, i.e., work order systems Planon, Zan Compute, Smart Inspect, Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Kronos payroll.
  • Demonstrated commitment to recycling and sustainability practices.

Key Accountabilities


Description
Staff and Personnel Management

  • Manages hiring for shifts, promotions, and disciplinary issues. Manages execution of Facilities, Operations & Management (FOM) training programs for existing and new employees. Periodically reviews existing staffing levels for maximum productivity. Assigns projects to Custodial Supervisors and Squad Leaders and reviews results to improve supervision of custodial staff. Provides staffing analyses for any new or renovated facilities, including recommendations for equipment.
  • Responsible for the performance management and monitoring of Custodial Supervisors to ensure assigned tasks are completed satisfactorily and on time. Tasks include touring facilities to monitor standards of cleanliness utilizing Dartmouth's quality assurance program, as well as seasonal responses such as snow removal, campus events, Commencement and Move-in projects.
  • Assesses and evaluates staff training needs to routinely enhance technical and customer service skills.
  • Counsels and advises personnel on job-related matters and prepares counseling reports and evaluations. Makes recommendations concerning disciplinary actions.
  • Works collaboratively with union leadership to create a productive and collaborative workplace.

Description
Custodial Department Management

  • Serves as one of the functional experts on the Custodial Services' inspection and work planning software, presently Smart Inspect from Core America.
  • Maintains and updates the equipment inventory for their area of responsibility. Reviews inventory periodically to ensure equipment nearing end of life cycle has a planned replacement
  • Liaises with supervisors on employee discipline and correction procedures related to quality assurance and building inspection standards.
  • Maintains an understanding of the timekeeping software (Kronos) and can assist the supervisors when necessary.
  • Maintains a strong understanding of relevant industry standards, including organizations like ISSA and APPA.
  • Maintains a strong understanding of Dartmouth College SEIU Local 560 Agreement and relevant Dartmouth policies. Works with Campus Services Human Resources and Labor Relations to create consistent work practices and expectations
  • Manages departmental purchases of supplies and equipment with Procurement. Reviews products and equipment to determine the appropriate selection to increase productivity. Develops systems to test and select appropriate new cleaning supplies and/or methods to make the custodial operation more efficient.
  • Manages cleaning service contractors when needed to supplement in-house operations.

Communication

  • Attends meetings with department heads and the trades services managers to act as representative for the custodial operations department.
  • Serves as departmental liaison with academic department heads, meeting regularly and following up on areas of concern to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Performs duties of Custodial Services Director during planned or unplanned absences. Works with Custodial Services Director and Core Management on Custodial Master Plan. Communicates all cross-functional shift activities from other shifts to the Custodial Services Director.
  • Collaborates with Custodial Services Director on communication strategy to effectively inform all levels of custodial organization and customers about upcoming initiatives or service level changes.
