Position Description

Employees in this classification are responsible for the performance of manual work involving the cleaning and care of buildings. Work is performed under supervision according to established procedures and methods, and is checked frequently and evaluated for the accomplishment of assigned tasks.

About the Department and/or College

Custodial Services provides daily cleaning of classrooms, offices, common areas, and bathrooms for more than 50 education and general use buildings on and off-campus. Daily service ensures that these buildings are ready for the business of higher education and the highest standards are maintained to provide a safe and productive campus.

Major/Essential Functions


  1. Restroom Specialist: Responsible for maintaining restrooms by removing objects from toilets, picking up floor debris, refilling consumable dispensers, emptying trash containers, dusting surfaces, disinfecting sinks and mirrors, and mopping floors.

  2. Light Duty Specialist: Involves emptying trash and recycling, dusting surfaces, spot cleaning doors and vertical surfaces, and cleaning and stocking whiteboards and chalkboards, with a focus on detail cleaning assigned areas weekly.

  3. Vacuum Specialist: Duties include checking wastebaskets for missed trash, vacuuming traffic areas and assigned spaces, spot vacuuming various surfaces, repositioning furniture, turning off lights after completion, cleaning vacuum equipment, and filling out maintenance forms nightly.

  4. Utility Specialist: Duties involve spot cleaning elevators, policing and vacuuming stairwells, cleaning glass entrances, collecting and hauling trash from collection points to dumpsters, detail cleaning carpets and hard surface floors, and ensuring first impression areas are clean.

Required Qualifications

Requires the ability to understand simple written and verbal instructions.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability to perform general custodial tasks including vacuuming, sweeping, general cleaning, sanitizing, finishing hardwood floors, carpet cleaning, etc.
  • Advanced skills in hard wood and/or tile floor maintenance and carpet care.

Pay Statement
