Departmental Overview

The Organization Advising & Student Involvement Services (OASIS) department of the Student Leadership & Engagement portfolio is at the center of student life at UC Berkeley. It is the campus department primarily responsible for encouraging student involvement and facilitating leadership development opportunities through student organizations. It serves a critical role in providing administrative, advising, and programmatic support to approximately 1,200 registered student organizations. The OASIS team promotes a student-centered learning environment and sense of belonging by empowering students to pursue their co-curricular interests, to cultivate their leadership skills, and to develop holistically. As student affairs practitioners and scholars, the OASIS team works with diverse communities of students, staff, faculty, and other stakeholders to enhance the overall student experience and educational environment of UC Berkeley.

Responsibilities

OVERVIEW:

The Director of Organization Advising & Student Involvement Services (OASIS) is a critical position that oversees the supervision of a dynamic team of advisors and oversight of over 1,200+ registered student organizations.

The OASIS Director has the direct responsibility of coaching, guiding and shaping a team of advisors. Additionally, they are responsible for creating, implementing, and assessing co-curricular programs and services that assist registered student organizations (RSO's) in areas such as organization life cycle development, event planning and execution, officer and membership transition, finances and resource allocation, team dynamics, university policies and procedures, and incorporating innovative practices into daily work. This position is part of the leadership team in the Student Leadership & Engagement portfolio. It reports directly to the Associate Dean of Students for Student Engagement under the purview of the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students.

Personnel Management and Unit Management:

  • Directly supervise and handle all supervisory functions for a team of 7 professional advisors; collaborate in training, supervising and evaluating based on department standards, timelines and procedures. Indirectly supervise approximately 18 student staff
  • Lead strategic planning for the department in the development of core mission, vision and values and direction
  • Build cohesion, camaraderie, and cross-functional collaboration amongst team
  • Manage and develop relationships with other directors and managers in the Student Leadership and Engagement portfolio, the Dean of Students portfolio, VCSA, and campus partners for the department
  • Assist in the creation, execution, and evaluation of professional and staff development opportunities for staff.
  • May supervise student staff

Student Group Advising and Services:

  • Design and implement advising services and leadership programs for registered student organizations (RSO's) in collaboration with student leaders, staff, and other campus units
  • Oversee a seamless student organization registration and new organization process
  • Provide programmatic and logistical support for events for student organizations such as involvement fairs and townhalls help with funding and funding request process
  • Oversight of process for student organization development
  • Identify student learning outcomes and leadership competencies to regularly assess impact of programs and services; make necessary modifications to ensure consistent alignment with OASIS mission and values
  • Oversight of the student organization registration process, including all trainings and student leader workshops

Policy Articulation:

  • Provide policy information on campus regulations and use of campus facilities to students and student groups (e.g., major events policy; time, place, and manner policy; Cub-E tabling policy, etc.)
  • Collaborate with the leadership team in the Dean of Student on protest response and management
  • Encourage policy compliance as appropriate, communicate consequences for non- compliance, and identify alternatives if possible
  • Ensure that staff understand policies and procedures applicable to student organizations
  • Develop strategic and creative methods to incorporate student input in designing new RSO policies
  • Develop programs and initiatives that increase student RSO leader's comprehension of guidelines set by national and state laws as well as institutional policies and procedures
  • Recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures that may negatively impact the co-curricular experience of students

Student Advocacy and Support:

  • Serve as the primary liaison and advocate for the university's RSOs to campus and community stakeholders
  • Partner with student government to help streamline processes and increase resources for ASUC-sponsored RSO's.
  • Develop relationships and systems of support , including programming, to center inclusion and belonging of all student leaders
  • Contribute to department-wide strategic planning and report writing to advance department vision and to help improve the overall student experience to internal/external stakeholders

Fiscal Management & Administration:

  • Manage operational and personnel expenses for the department
  • Ensure resources are used efficiently and effectively, financial tasks are handled appropriately, and monthly/annual budget reports are monitored and reconciled according to due dates
  • Assist direct reports in carrying out budgetary responsibilities, policies, and procedures
  • Collaborate with Business Development & Finance to provide financial advising and support services to RSO's that receive ASUC funding
  • Refer RSO's to the multiple funding applications and financial resources available to student groups

Collaboration and Professional Development:

  • Collaborate with staff, faculty, ASUC (student government), Graduate Assembly (student government), RSOs, and other campus units in designing leadership development opportunities, advising services, and support programs for RSO's.
  • Serve as the department representative on department, division and system wide committees.
  • Keep abreast of current literature and trends in the student affairs field via publications, engagement and opportunities with professional organizations and through networking across the field

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Involvement in tasks specific to unique circumstances which are unplanned and/or unexpected
  • Additional projects and programs from the unit or division
Required Qualifications

  • At least 5-6 years of professional experience working with college students, preferably in student organization advising and/or leadership development
  • Ability to manage and lead a large and diverse team of professional staff, including skills in developing and coaching staff
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques, dialogue facilitation, and conflict mediation
  • Effective and persuasive communication skills for a variety of audiences and situations
  • Skills in developing and evaluating processes and services to make improvements
  • Skills in social perceptiveness, empathy and cultural humility, intercultural competence around fostering an equitable and inclusive environment and challenging organizational policies and practices that may be exclusionary
  • Ability to build working relationships with, and prioritize the competing demands of, students, staff, faculty, administration, and community stakeholders
  • Ability to respond and manage student crises with discernment for urgent versus critical issues
  • Ability to identify problems, reason, and develop original ideas to solutions within a fast- paced and politically charged environment
  • Strong administrative, organizational, budgetary, project management, and multitasking skills
  • Ability to design and deliver training, customer service, and leadership/professional development opportunities for students and staff
  • Working knowledge of pertinent laws, policies, processes, and procedures that apply to student activities and organizations
  • Thorough knowledge of student development and leadership theory as well as best practices and professional standards related to student organization advising
  • Working knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences
  • Skills for developing and assessing student learning outcomes and leadership competencies
  • Working knowledge of standard office machines and University-specific computer application program
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
