Position Highlights

The Manager, Finance and Operations is an essential member of the College of Medicine-Tucson finance team, responsible for supporting College leadership with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis to aid in strategic decision-making across all departments, centers, and administrative units within the College of Medicine-Tucson. This role is pivotal in developing and executing budget strategies, producing comprehensive financial reports, performing analysis and ensuring compliance with institutional policies.

The successful candidate will monitor financial performance, identify trends, and recommend solutions to enhance resource management and operational efficiency. By collaborating with College leadership and key stakeholders, this role contributes to the optimization of financial processes, reporting and the achievement of the College's overall financial objectives.

This position requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to excel in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Advanced technical proficiency in Excel, exceptional communication skills, and expertise in financial reporting and analysis are critical to success in this role.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist in leading the annual All-Funds budget process and quarterly forecasting for the College. Collaborate with leadership to develop strategies and tools to facilitate budgeting and financial reporting.
  • Provide guidance and support to department administrators and finance staff on budget development, management, and forecasting.
  • Review and analyze financial data to validate accuracy and identify discrepancies, working proactively to address concerns with respective departments and centers.
  • Compile, organize and enter financial financial data into the University budget system, ensuring data integrity and compliance with institutional requirements.
  • Support College leadership in overseeing all budget office deliverables, ensuring all submissions are accurate, complete and delivered on time.
  • Develop and/or monitor budgets for administrative areas, as needed.
  • Analyze variances between actual financial results and budgeted/forecast amounts, identifying trends and providing recommendations to address areas of concern.
  • Forecast future financial performance based on historical data and trends.
  • Prepare various reports and schedules, leveraging advanced Excel skills to compile large volumes of financial data from multiple systems and sources.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements and other ad hoc reports for leadership.
  • Provide financial insight and recommendations to support strategic initiatives and decision-making.
  • Develop processes and standard operating procedures for financial activities within College of Medicine-Tucson finance.
  • Support in the management of College of Medicine-Tucson's financial allocation model by compiling data, performing reconciliations, creating tools and reports to efficiently track and monitor financial status. Provide recommendations for improvements.
  • Assist with overseeing the clinical compensation plan, to include the distribution of effort for administrative leadership positions, funding distributions, and academic rates.
  • Assist with managing College commitments.
  • Participate in the preparation of institutional and industry benchmark surveys.
  • Support new College and/or UA strategic initiatives or projects, as needed.
  • Serve as a key liaison to departments and centers, addressing financial inquires, and offering guidance or recommendations on various financial matters.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of budgeting, financial reporting and fiscal management.
  • Strong financial, analytical and modeling skills.
  • Advanced skills in Excel and other Microsoft programs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting and advising.
  • Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills, along with the ability to work within tight and often conflicting deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Ability to to analyze financial data and identify trends, variances and opportunities.
  • Strong problem solving abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Eight (8) years of relevant work experience are required.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Three or more (3+) years of experience managing employees.
  • Experience at an academic institution managing state, discretionary, sponsored and gift funds.
  • Experience working with federal grants and sponsor requirements including managing cost share.
  • Experience with UAccess (Analytics, Financials, UAccess Employee) and knowledge of UA policies and procedures.
