Position Summary

This position coordinates instructional support for a variety of science division classes with an emphasis in introductory, general, and specialized biology courses, as well as the physics and engineering courses. It provides professional and technical support requiring knowledge of a basic applied science, assists with the management of other lab support, maintenance and storeroom functions, and serves on the division safety committee, sometimes acting as co-chair. The position is responsible for coordinating field trips for supported courses for faculty, the upkeep of auxiliary areas (greenhouse, aquaria, fieldwork and greenhouse storage areas), and acts as a lead for part time hourly and work study employees that are assigned to work within the biology and physics labs. This position reports to the Laboratory Support Supervisor.

• Coordinates the scientific preparation for laboratory programs and field-oriented courses using safety procedures in handling hazardous materials such as reagents or bacterial cultures.
• Coordinates laboratory support, maintenance and store room functions such as stockrooms, specimens, chemical and bacterial collections following/implementing safety procedures in in proper handling of hazardous materials.
• Prepare and clean up/put away equipment, specimens, models, reagents or computers for science laboratory and classroom activities, and ensure associated hazardous wastes are properly packaged for treatment or disposal.
• Organization, maintaining cleanliness, and restocking of supplies in labs and preparation spaces.
• Coordinate with faculty to create a quarterly schedule of lab activities; Assist faculty in developing lab experiments that conform to laboratory limitations, safety requirements and needs. Advise instructors on laboratory issues.

• Evaluates equipment specifications and makes purchase recommendations.
• Provides training for students and faculty in a specialty area such as a specific computer software program, specialized equipment or microbiology techniques, etc.;
• Maintains computerized inventory.
• Acts as coordinator of laboratory controlling all equipment, chemicals and use of space.
• Performs script writing and editing for scientific training materials for both employees and students.

• Set up, use and maintenance of equipment
• Operates and performs routine maintenance and repairs on laboratory and demonstration instruments and equipment; instructs students, teaching assistants and faculty in the use of equipment.
• Train and direct assigned work-study students or part-time hourly lab personnel.
• May teach laboratory portion of selected classes.
• Performs related duties as required.

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a basic applied science.
• 2 year's experience performing similar work as listed above.
• OR equivalent education and/or experience.
• Experience overseeing or directing the work of others.
• Able to perform script writing and editing for written training materials
• Able to handle and dispose of hazardous reagents and biohazards.

• Successful completion of a criminal history background check prior to employment
• The ability to perform the following:
  • Alternate walking, sitting, standing, sometimes for long periods of time
  • Frequent bending and stooping
  • Reaching at or below shoulder level and reaching overhead
  • Use of stepstools, step ladders and ladders
  • Pushing and pulling carts and trays
  • Lifting or carrying 42 lbs (2-21 lb jugs of water) x 6 trips to the car, 1 time per week
  • Climbing a step stool while lifting 21 lb jugs to fill a tank, 3-6 times, 2-3 days per week
  • Trekking on foot over uneven terrain to collect plant specimens for labs and exams
  • Travel with own vehicle to local bodies of water, local vendors, and an annual trip up to 50 miles.

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time position scheduled to work Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet the needs of the department which may include some evenings and weekend hours. The salary range is $4,093 to $5,501 per month.
