The Aerospace Corporation's Experiment Lab, xLab, develops prototypes, instruments, pathfinders, and demonstration systems to address our customers' hardest problems at the speed of need. We are looking for an Electromechanical Lab Manager (Technical Support Services Manager-Electromechanical) to join xLab's systems and design engineering staff. You will work with experienced engineers and technicians to develop, test and deliver prototype instruments and systems. This includes responsibility for mechanical assemblies, electronic hardware and test equipment used in support of flight hardware assembly, integration, and test; including management of an environmental test facility used for small payload and small sat space vehicle testing.

Work Model

This is a full-time position based in Chantilly, VA, which requires 100% onsite work.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Operates strategically to manage and maintain three medium size labs
  • Engages with impact to build and grow a team of electromechanical technical support technicians to support prototype and development projects: assembly, integration and test, hand soldering, harness fabrication, fixturing
  • Monitor tooling and material usage and costs to ensure adequate but not excess stock is available
  • Supervise the production flow within the labs, ensuring safety and compliance by partnering with EHS and Metrology teams
  • Work in ESD and clean room environments and maintain/control standards as necessary
  • Technical support for lab hardware and computer systems used in laboratory environments: specialized software installation, CAD and CNC support, prototype PCB design/assembly, ground support equipment; network/testbed setup

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED minimum, + Vocational trade school or Apprenticeship program
  • 8+ years of hands-on decision making experience in lab management and maintaining equipment (thermal chambers, TVAC, vibe tables, solder tools, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes)
  • Effective interpersonal skills to coordinate efforts and work with other internal and external organizations
  • Ability to quickly troubleshoot problems and prioritize multiple projects effectively
  • Demonstrate good business acumen to influence efficiency, customer satisfaction, and cost-consciousness
  • Ability to occasionally do domestic travel (<5 trips/year)
  • This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

  • Prior experience working as a manager in a fast-paced lab environment
  • Advanced certification in: SolidWorks CAD-CAM, LabVIEW, IPC-610/620/7711/7721/J-STD
  • Experience working in scientific research environment
