Overview:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on research on materials joining and allied manufacturing processes, with an emphasis on AI/machine learning based manufacturing process development and optimization. This position resides in the Materials Joining Group in the Materials Structures and Processing Section, Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Examples on areas of research interest include but are not limited to:

  • AI/machine learning algorithm development.
  • Sensing, Machine vision, image processing and data fusion.
  • Inline manufacturing process monitoring and control.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop foundation AI models under various projects.
  • Develop, integrate, implement, and deploy novel AI/ML algorithms and workflows towards industrial manufacturing applications.
  • Collaborate with internal and industry partners on related projects.
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Computational Science/Engineering or a related field completed within the last 5 years.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in AI/ML research and development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in AI/ML algorithm development related to machine vision, multi-sensing data fusion, data analysis and feature extraction.
  • Expertise in High Performance Computing.
  • Working knowledge in system integration, data acquisition, and hardware control.
  • Basic knowledge in welding manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Special Requirement:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
