About the Position

Do you enjoy leading a construction project and seeing a project design come to life? Then, the Resident Engineer position is for you!

In this role, you will lead the project lifecycle from construction through project closeout. You will utilize your expertise to ensure the project construction is delivered timely, within budget, and in accordance with the plans and contract documents. With limited supervision, you will independently perform construction oversight, administration, and management and will have full responsibility for delivering the project. You will also speak to citizens, other agencies, and organizations on behalf of the County and will be the subject matter expert on assigned projects.

We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field

  • Five years of professional civil engineering work experience

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration or by the technical board of another state, with the ability to obtain Arizona registration within six months of employment

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

We Also Value

  • Five years of direct and relevant experience as a Resident Engineer on roadway, bridge, and transportation construction projects

  • Experience in federally funded construction projects

  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) and/or training in Job-Order-Contract construction delivery method

Job Contributions

  • Manage, plan, and coordinate various size construction projects from routine to complex, including roadway, bridge, drainage, and transportation improvements

  • Review, inspect, and monitor projects under contract; resolve discrepancies between field conditions and design plans; recommend methods of resolving complex problems

  • Perform constructability reviews to identify overlooked issues that increase costs, impair the schedule, and decrease quality to achieve the best bid package possible

  • Oversee the work of assigned staff to assure the work quality and timely accomplishment of assigned duties and responsibilities; develop performance goals and objectives for staff; provide mentorship and guidance to motivate staff

  • Review projects for design clarity, accuracy, constructability, and bid-readiness

  • Attend chair meetings with inspectors, contractors, utility companies, survey crews, material testing labs, consultants, and engineers to ensure a successful project

  • Participate on technical and advisory teams, committees, task forces, or other workgroups

  • Receive and resolve customer issues and questions; provide the requested information; inform customers of the work status of proposed and existing projects

  • Act as MCDOT liaison with other adjoining communities as it relates to construction projects

  • Other job duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • This position is eligible for hybrid flexibility after a brief training period.

  • Exerting 20 - 25 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly

  • The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation
