Investigator - Hourly

Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office

Hourly Range: $22.33 - $33.51

Job Summary: This role will primarily conduct Professional Standards Division internal investigations regarding member policy violations. As needed, this role will also conduct background investigations on all prospective candidates for the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office that require WI Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification and for all other civilian service positions. Compile information and present to senior management for hiring decisions.



Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct Professional Standards Division internal investigations regarding member policy violations.
  • Serve as Witness - Serve as a witness in any hearing that is before the Personnel Review Board pertaining to an internal investigation.
  • Obtain Necessary Documents - Obtain, review, and organize documents related to a candidate's application and verify information provided.
  • Candidate Contact - Meet with candidate in person to ensure application information is correct and accurate. Verify applicant/candidate meets minimum requirements. Take photo and fingerprints of candidate.
  • Interview References - Contact candidate's references to obtain statements relative to the candidate' qualifications, character, work ethic and other relevant information. Conduct neighborhood checks of candidates.
  • Review and Verify Employment Records - Contact current and past employers for input on the candidate's employment history.
  • Query Criminal Records - Query the WI Time System, the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access program and other confidential sources to determine a candidate's criminal or otherwise unlawful conduct that rose to the level of law enforcement contact.
  • Prepare Written Reports - Prepare a written narrative summary regarding the information obtained and reviewed for each candidate. Include all relevant documents obtained in the presentation of said report for senior management review.
  • Serve as Witness - Serve as a witness in any hiring challenges by a candidate to verify the background process and documents contained in the report packet.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Current resident of the State of WI
  • High school or G.E.D. equivalent required
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout incumbency
  • Basic level of proficiency in all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets required


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or higher from an approved college or university in police science or criminal justice preferred
  • Previous work experience conducting confidential investigations and report writing preferred
  • Five (5) years or more of work experience as a law enforcement officer preferred


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the practices and procedures of law enforcement agencies; ability to conduct comprehensive, confidential investigations; ability to prepare and present accurate, objective, concise and complete written reports; ability to get to and from investigation sites; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with County departments, police departments, sheriff's departments, the Division of Corrections, public officials, employers, and the general public.
