POSITION SUMMARY

The Systems Administrator will manage the performance, stability and maintenance for core AccuWeather servers, their software, and related technologies. This role involves providing technical support for the operational stability of critical systems and offering 3rd level user support. The ideal candidate will have experience with scripting and working with application developers. Training will be provided for primary responsibilities as an OpenVMS Systems Manager, and the role includes on-call responsibilities.

This position will be hybrid at AccuWeather's State College, PA Headquarters.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Remain on-call for critical system problems.
• Manage the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of systems in a large-scale server environment.
• Coordinate the overall network monitoring of all systems.
• Establish and implement multi-tier archive strategies for large volumes of meteorological data.
• Establish and implement backup and recovery plans for all databases.
• Establish and implement strategies for replicating large, frequently updating datasets.
• Provide 3rd level customer/user technical support.
• Coordinate resolution of identified system problems and work with the technical support team, vendors, and development team to resolve.
• Proactively identify and spearhead resolution to operational support issues.
• Implement new technologies in coordination with other staff.
• Develop improvements to data gathering on monitoring alarms and trouble tickets, leading the solution efforts to resolve identified issues.
• Work closely with network engineers, developers, and senior systems administrators to resolve technical support issues within the production environment.
• Establish web server installation/configuration standards and coordinate retroactive implementation of those standards.
• Develop system diagrams to assist with troubleshooting efforts.
• Provide consistent and up-to-date information to upper-level management regarding the operation and status of assigned areas of responsibility.
• Troubleshoot applications and investigate application issues, working with developers to resolve them.
• Other duties as assigned.

BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS

• College degree, vendor certifications, or four years working in a similar environment or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Experience and troubleshooting skills with various operating systems (e.g., Windows, MacOS, Linux/UNIX).
• Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP and associated applications.
• Working knowledge of DNS, load balancing, and Active Directory.
• Familiarity with clustering, SAN technology, internet, and networking protocols.
• Knowledge of file serving, backup fundamentals, and best practices.
• Previous experience with email protocols.
• Organized with the ability to manage small to medium-sized projects.
• Conceptual knowledge of communication between differing operating systems and computer architectures.
• Programming knowledge with the ability to compile and debug programs.
• A good foundation in one or more scripting languages.
• Preferred prior experience as a Windows or Linux administrator; OpenVMS management experience is a plus.
• Exceptional communication skills, both in person and in writing.
• Ability to work with a sense of urgency, both communicating technical issues and resolving them.
• Must be able to use standard office computer applications (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).
• Curiosity and initiative with a drive to maintain operational stability.

• Must be able to work within small spaces such as data closets and computer room aisles.

The noise level in the work environment varies from quiet office noise to the noise of heavy air conditioning units. Normally the temperature level is maintained at approximately 60F or higher.
