KCI's Natural Resources Practice is growing and we are looking for a Scientist to support projects related to watershed management and planning, including Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) compliance and modeling.

Duties, Responsibilities & Other

This position will also support a variety of projects and assignments, including those organized in the following major subject areas:

Local TMDL and Bay TMDL Modeling

    Perform pollutant load modeling using the Bay Program's Chesapeake Assessment Scenario Tool (CAST).
  • Perform pollutant load modeling using Maryland Department of the Environment's (MDE's) TMDL Implementation Progress and Planning Tool (TIPP).
  • Review published information and GIS mapping.
  • Develop TMDL implementation plans.
  • Perform data analysis using National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) geodatabase.

Watershed Planning

  • Prepare watershed management plans to satisfy NPDES Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit conditions and TMDL requirements.
  • Support watershed scale pollutant load modeling.
  • Prepare concise and well written plans.
  • Support public outreach project elements.

Stream Assessment

  • Participate in biological stream monitoring using Maryland Biological Stream Survey protocols for benthic macroinvertebrates, fish, and habitat.
  • Conduct baseflow and stormflow water quality sampling.
  • Complete geomorphological stream assessments.
  • Complete riparian vegetation assessments.

General

  • Perform field work in a variety of weather conditions. Field work conducted in the summer can be strenuous and physically demanding.
  • Adhere to rigorous Quality Assurance and Quality Control processes to produce data of the highest quality.
  • Assist with the development of QA/QC plans and Standard Operating Procedures covering all aspects of natural resource monitoring and assessment activities.
  • Input data, write technical reports, develop maps and graphics using ArcGIS Pro and other mapping tools.
  • Use analytical skills necessary to solve complex problems both in a team setting and individually.
  • Functioning efficiently with minimal guidance will be expected. Independent work, organizational ability, regular communication and time management skills are required for this position.
  • Learn new field and office skills quickly.

Qualifications

Education and/or Skills Required:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Geology, or related field.
  • Knowledge of relevant environmental regulations and fieldwork methods.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Proficiency in GIS software.
  • Good communication and technical writing skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think critically.

Certificates, licenses, and/or Registrations Required:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to maintain required certifications
