A Brief Overview
In collaboration with the Senior Director of Nursing, the Nursing Professional Development Manager provides oversight of day to day education related activities that impact clinical practice and role development in the Department of Nursing while maintaining consistency with the larger institution goals. The NPD Manager is an expert in education and development and ensures that educational outcomes are measurable and are in alignment with the educational design and planning of programming.

What you will do

  • Practice
  • Responsible for day to day operations that impact the departmental operating budget
  • Direct supervision of the administrative staff
  • Direct supervision of centralized NPD team and support for unit based NPDs
  • Maintain professional skills and refine expertise through appropriate educational/developmental activities and professional affiliations, staying current with national and international advances in care of the pediatric patient
  • Participation in the annual development of goals and alignment of activities to nursing department and hospital initiatives
  • Lead and/or participate in bi-monthly meeting to review progress toward goals and early identification of emergent education needs.
  • Maintains compliance with regulation / legislation impacting nursing education.
  • Leads NPD team in assessing knowledge, skill and practice gaps within the macrosystem differentiating between practice gaps, performance issues and process/ system issues.

  • Role models appearance and behaviors that promote a positive image of nursing.
  • Role models how to interact with parents/patients and colleagues with respect and dignity
  • Leads program development to support emergent educational needs, ensuring resources are allocated as needed to meet the needs across the enterprise.
  • Serves as mentor and consultant. Ensures opportunities for professional growth and development of staff.
  • Collaborates with other departments to foster interdisciplinary education and meet the needs of patients and families. Participates and ensures representation in interdisciplinary education forums.
  • Provides leadership in Divisional/Departmental and institution wide committees.
  • Research/Scholarship
  • Provide expertise and consultation in EBP. Promotes research and QI in patient care settings and in Nursing Professional Development.
  • Promotes an environment that encourages opportunities to pursue scholarly work in education and educational outcomes measurement.
  • Participates in applying research findings to education program development.
  • Learning/Professional Development
  • Leads the NPD team in promoting and integrating the science of the NPD specialty in order to continuously improve their practice. Responsible for the orientation, onboarding and professional development of both centralized and unit based NPDs. Identifies and meets developmental needs of all roles within the NPD team.
  • Creates an environment which is blame free, where a spirit of appreciative inquiry flourishes and thinking outside the box and taking risks is a system property.
  • Resource Management
  • Participates in promoting high quality, efficient, and cost effective education.
  • Monitors monthly budget including personnel management, supplies and equipment, and productivity targets. Seeks opportunity to find efficiencies across different systems used in daily workflow.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Nursing Required
  • Master's Degree Nursing or related Healthcare field of study Required

Experience Qualifications

  • At least five (5) years Experience in nurse education or related field Required
  • At least three (3) years Progressive management/leadership experience Required

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of hospital personnel. (Required proficiency)
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to coordinate and implement multiple tasks simultaneously. (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required
  • Nursing Professional Development Certification NPD-BC - American Nurses Credentialing Center - upon hire - Required
