DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the incumbent will work as a laboratory assistant to assist in studies of rodent models and laboratory rodent colonies within the Department of Psychiatry. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting with laboratory work and animal care responsibilities. Duties include: assist with DNA isolation and preparation for NGS applications; will also assist with maintaining laboratory rodent colonies. The role includes following established protocols for both molecular biology procedures and animal care, maintaining detailed records, and coordinating with team members to ensure smooth operations, assist in performing DNA isolation from animal tissues using liquid handler robot, measuring DNA concentrations and perform quality control on Tape station, and assist in preparing submission documentation for bioinformatics team. Assist with other project and miscellaneous duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college, including courses in Biology and organic/inorganic Chemistry, and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience handling mice and rats (restraining, ear tagging, injections, etc.).

  • Demonstrated ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, etc., with the willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.

  • General laboratory experience.

  • Ability to recognize, report and troubleshoot technical problems.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Experience with molecular biology techniques and equipment.

  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining rodent breeding colony.

  • Extreme attention to details, high standards for accuracy and documentation.

  • Excellent organizational, time management, and record-keeping skills.

  • Working knowledge of the Animal Care Program's required husbandry practices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and coursework in biology or related disciplines.

  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations that govern the housing and management of laboratory animals as applied to the University of California. Sensitivity to the needs of laboratory animals in compliance to AAALAC standards.

  • Experience with laboratory computers and specialized data collection software (Med Associates, San Diego Instruments, Noldus, DSI).

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Must be willing to handle mice and rats.

  • Must be willing to euthanize mice and rats according to IACUC protocol.

  • Must be able to work overtime, weekends, and evenings if required with animal colony.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $45,999 - $54,079 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $22.03 - $25.90

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
