What you'll do in this role

• Create a highly technical, supportive, and inclusive team environment aligning with Symetra's Core Values, Leadership Commitments, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to create a technical strategy for the company's line of business.
• Support an engineering culture that emphasizes quality, agility, experimentation, and continuous delivery.
• Foster a Dev/Sec/Ops mindset for delivery teams that own their systems and services end-to-end.
• Coach, mentor and develop a full-stack team of software developers to help them reach their potential.
• Recruit, hire, grow, and retain engineering and architecture talent.
• Estimate the financial impact of architectural solutions.
• Lead large, complex initiatives that deliver innovative/modern products and experiences.
• Translate business problems to technology solutions.
• Architect and build highly reliable, secure, scalable, and performant solutions.
• Create effective partnerships with third party partners for service transformation, product delivery and support.
• Provide hands-on leadership and collaboration regarding key technology decisions.
• Actively pursue the reduction of technology debt where possible and reduce operational risk.
• Champion user-focused design dedicated to the delivery of exceptional user experience.
• Perform ongoing assessments of teams and programs to support continuous improvement and innovation.
• Support off-hours production support and release activities to ensure high availability of critical systems.

Compensation

SalaryRange: $166,400- $277,400 plus eligibilityfor the company annual bonus program.

Your education, skills and experience

• 2+ years engineering management experience in high-growth engineering organizations or equivalent experience
• 5 - 7+ years of engineering experience as an individual contributor working as a backend / full stack developer
• Contemporary knowledge in software engineering and solutions architecture
• Experience engineering within the AWS services ecosystem is a plus
• Recent experience with microservices, serverless, event driven and distributed systems architecture
• A champion for continuous integration / continuous delivery (CI/CD)
• Experience with data management, data structures and systems design
• Deep knowledge of Databases, software architecture as well as software development design patterns and principles.
• Proven track record of leading cross-team initiatives and driving initiatives end-to-end from inception to production.
• Demonstrated change agent with a passion to positively dramatically impact business.
• Ability to create an environment that fosters data-driven experimentation at high velocity.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science preferred
