Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Staff Attorney - Multiline Claims and Insurance.

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Insurance & Multiline Claims, the primary responsibilities of this role are: 1) to provide competent, timely and proactive claims administration and management of all claims and incidents for all of NYU Langone Hospitals insurance programs, including Property, General Liability, Automobile, Trustees and Officers, Crime, Cyber, OCIP, Fiduciary and other insurable lines of coverage; 2) to assist the Insurance Department in the development, implementation and optimization of NYULHs placements of programs of insurance on an annual basis; and 3) to assist the Insurance Department with coverage, insurance and various other legal matters as they involve contracts, evidence of insurance, real estate transactions, leases, property losses, employee coverage issues, etc.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Insurance & Multiline Claims, the Multiline Claims and Insurance Attorney will be working closely with the NYULH VP & Senior Counsel for Insurance and Claims Administration, the NYULH Director of Insurance and Multiline Claims, the NYU Insurance Department, outside Third Party Administrators (TPA), NYULH Risk Management, NYULH Real Estate Development and Facilities, and NYUs Department of Insurance and Risk Management with the following responsibilities:

    1. Assume primary responsibility for the legal management and resolution of a caseload of new and existing multiline claims (primarily General Liability and Auto Liability claims and litigations) venued in various counties throughout New York and New Jersey.
    2. Manage property loss claims, which includes coordinating with the internal department that reported the loss to commence a coverage and damages analysis; implementation of a process to gather and organize loss information for recovery, determination of whether to seek reimbursement from an at fault third party or other rights of recourse; and coordinating with at the fault party and/or NYULHs first party insurers for reimbursement of damages related to the loss.
    3. Identify risk transfer situations within the multiline claims and effectuate same.
    4. Act as point of contact for insurance related concerns including the completion of renewal applications and exposure data to various brokers for all lines of the insurance program.
    5. Work with the Director and Assistant Director of Insurance of NYULH in the analysis of, and recommendations for, placement of the various lines of Insurance policies.
    6. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the organization to support risk identification, risk mitigation and loss prevention initiatives.
    7. Coordinate the administration of claims with insurance brokers, various claims departments and TPAs; liaise with other departments and facilities to gather claim related documentation for discovery and related investigations.
    8. Provide insurance review and advise of insurance provisions of contracts including supply chain contracts, real estate transactions, construction agreements, etc.
    9. Coordinate in providing evidence of insurance.
    10. Maintain electronic claim files.
    11. Participate in site visits and witness interviews, as needed.
    12. Actively manage litigation costs and expenses
    13. Stay up to date on changes in law and legal climate
    14. Provide legal analysis and coverage positions on coverage issues.
    15. Provide timely responses to time sensitive projects, as assigned.
    16. Direct oversight and implementation of strategic direction for defense counsel in the handling of claims in the most optimized fashion.
    17. Analyze newly reported claims to determine whether matters should be self -handled, assigned to outside counsel, be reported to the insurance company, and/or transferred to another entity that is contractually obligated to indemnify.
    18. Maintain regular contact with adjusters, representatives of insurance companies and third-party administrators, as needed.
    19. Prepare reports for senior management, as needed.
    20. Assist in assignment of counsel.
    21. Keep VP & Senior Counsel for Insurance Administration and NYULH Director of Insurance informed of material claims and status of litigations.
    22. Initiate early resolution of claims via direct strategic negotiation, when appropriate; encourage mediation and other forms of dispute resolution and judicial intervention, where appropriate.
    23. Attend various phases of Court conferences and trials, as needed.
    24. Monitor all phases of trials, reporting daily progress and modify strategies as developments dictate.
    25. Prepare Executive Claims Summary for each case being handled with timely reserve setting recommendations.

Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Admission to the NY Bar in good standing with a minimum of 6 year's experience. A minimum of 4 years multiline claims experience in the adjustment of liability, property, and casualty claims with a proven track record of successful claims program management. Ability to multi-task among multiple priorities. Proficient in the use of Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Self-motivated to implement successful results of complex claims. Significant and demonstrable expertise in direct negotiation and NY law.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications: Individual must be detail oriented and organized. They must have the ability to work on multiple assignments simultaneously and meet deadlines on a self-motivated basis. Must possess the ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of business personnel. Individual must possess well developed communication skills, strong research and legal interpretation abilities and a strong client service orientation.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $146,384.38 - $168,540.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
