Medical Information Management

The Medical Information Management (MIM) Department at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center plays a crucial role in maintaining, securing, and ensuring the integrity of patient information. Their responsibilities encompass supporting patient care, education, research, health system operations, connect site affiliates and administrative needs. By effectively managing medical record data and information resources, they ensure that accurate and confidential patient information is readily available for making informed medical decisions. The department adheres to hospital policies, procedures, bylaws, and third-party regulatory requirements, upholding high standards for medical record-keeping.

Master Patient Index

The Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) team plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of electronic medical records. Their responsibilities include identifying, investigating, and merging duplicate MRNs (medical record numbers) within the system. By understanding how identity events impact the merging process, they contribute to patient safety, quality of care, privacy, and overall patient satisfaction.

This skilled team reviews audit trails, revises the EMPI, handles deceased patient records, manages Epic mail, and utilizes the potential duplicate weighting system in Epic. They are vigilant in recognizing instances where a patients record has been overwritten, promptly reporting potential identity theft cases, and addressing patients documented erroneously.
